  1. Does FSX Steam version work better with Windows 8.1 than the original FSX? With the original version I crash to the desktop a lot. So I was hoping the Steam version would work without crashes. Appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks, Gerry
  2. Hey everyone, I am a frequent fsx flyer but very new to this forum. I have flown hours and hours on windows 7 and vista and now the time has come for me to install fsx on windows 8.1   I know lots will say that 8.1 has problems regarding fsx, but I have no real choice as except for fsx, 8.1 does everything better for me. I have the fsx gold pack, GEX europe, REX + OD 2 and PMDG 737, 747 and Carenado B1900D aircrafts to install. Right now, I have done the following. 1) Run standard fsx disk 1 and 2 (deluxe) setup. (installed on secondary HDD) 2) Flown a free flight for 10 mins 3) Installed SP1 4) Flown a free flight for 10 mins 5) Installed acceleration pack. I have only found this video for 8.1 and I have followed it. I was really looking if anyone knows of a guide ( or could quickly summarise for me ) the cfg tweaks and tweaks in fsx that I should do to get the best out of fsx in windows 8.1 for my hardware. I have capable hardware to run max settings (I think) ; I have an AMD FX-6300 @ 3.5 GHz, XFX 7970 DD OC and 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM. I would also appreciate if anyone has any tips to give for installing the add ons that I listed above. I apologise, if I am posting in the wrong place or if this topic has come up several times before, as I said, I am very new to this forum, but not fsx. Thanks for all the help, in advance!
  3. I'm pulling my hair out here. Can anyone help? I have a fairly mega FSX setup. I use a lot of Orbx products. My problem is odd & is as follows. Say for instance I am flying around say UK, NW USA or Norway then I get no problems. I also get no problems from flying in most other locations too. Anyway, recently I bought the latest version of Orbx vector which really made a difference. I thought I'd try & fly around Bergen as I went there a couple of years ago. This looked excellent. I then thought I'd check out some Greek islands. I selected Naxos as an airport, (It could have been Athens or Skiathos etc.) The airport loaded but after a few seconds my Track IR had stopped as well as one of the Axis on my joystick. I then shut down FSX BUT it did not shut down properly!! The main screen turned black, (Ipressed escape & returned to desktop. However the FSX icon was still in my task bar. I went to task manager & found that FSX was still running although I could not switch to it. The task manager did NOT say that the sim had stopped working. If I shut down FSX in task manager & then reloaded FSX then the sim works again unless I go to one of the Greek islands. There may be others but without checking them all I really can't tell. All I know is that the sim seems to work in what I perceive as most areas. Can anyone shed any light on the troublesome problem? I really want to try & escape a re-install as my FSX dir is 170GB!!! (YIKES)!
  4. Hey everyone, I believe I have solved the joystick woes with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I have done 2 days of stress testing FSX and P3D with multiple installs of the program and OS, and I haven't had a disconnect yet. Before I go further - I want to give my thanks to certain individuals who have helped me and inspired me to solve this joystick annoyance. 1) Word Not Allowed for having his awesome guides 2) AVSIM's staff/team for creating the amazing Hardware/Software Guide to FSX/P3D 3) Peter Dowson's FSUIPC utility (it got me through the periods when no joystick fix was avialable) 4) Orbx Team - Thank you Global and your Tips and Tricks Forum section 5) NickN's - FSX Computer System Guide 6) Ranak Jones of "Rogue's Guide to Acquisition: Principles of Final Frontier" for sending me a spare XFX 6970 for my system and pointing me to Windows 8 Registry to search for USB Device GUIDs potential errors 7) Microsoft MSDN for having Windows 8.1 Pro for testing/evaluation purposes only. 8) LM Prepar3d Developer Network Testing: 1) FullScreen FSX in Eyefinity Mode (5760x1200) for 3 hours+ 2) Windowed FSX in triple screen mode and 1920x1200 for 4 hours+ 3) Multiple active windows on top of FSX Windowed in background for 4 hours+ 4) Testing was done with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports FSX testing was in Win 8.1 and 8, and P3D 1.4 was in Win 8. My System Cpu: i5-750 (intel 1156 cpu) overclocked to 4.1Ghz Memory: 8GB DDR3 Storage: 1xSamsung 830 SSD at Sata III (Main drive), Intel 80GB SSD at Sata II speeds, 1 TB hitachi mechanical HDD at sata II <- all connected to PCIEx4 Sata III controller) Motherboard: MSI Fuzion p55A - has native usb 2.0 and Renesas USB 3.0 controller Video: New XFX 6970 2GB with latest ATI drivers OS - Windows 8 Pro Clean install / Windows 8.1 Clean Install Joystick: Thurstmaster Hotas X Windows 8 Solution - (FSX / Prepar3d 1.4) 1) Make sure power management features are off or set to high 2) Most important setting is USB Selective Suspend Setting is Disabled (we all knew this) Honestly, that setting does not disable USB selective suspend in Windows 8 (this is for Windows 8 only), like it promises. The power management on USB devices is set to Selective Suspend Please see your HID Devices, USB Input Device and USB Root Hub Devices - They are STILL set to Suspend. You have to turn OFF the manual power savings one by one to all USB Devices/Compositive Devices and the all the USB Root Hubs (this is v.important). If it says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and is checked then please UNCHECK it For example like this This was discovered when I was searching for Joystick UID's in Windows 8 based on Ranak's suggestion. This is where stuff gets weird for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I am no registry expert, but GUID's for my joystick is half correct and half backwards as compared to one listed in FSUIPC's ini file See Pic - Windows Registry And my Joystick GUID in FSUIPC So for some reason half of the GUID is backwards in Registry - I do not know if that is normal or not but that led me to search all the usb devices/ports in Device Manager. Here I found all the power saving features were somehow enabled when Windows Power Management is explicitly set to disable. Recap So for Windows 8 Pro ONLY - Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and make sure Windows Power management also has Selective Suspend set to Disabled. Prepar3d 1.4 - Please have JOYSTICKS=1 in [CONTROLS] in P3D.cfg (more on this later) Windows 8.1 Pro (RTM Version) - FSX TEST No joystick disconnects with 1 Setting change Only - Joystick works in Windows 8.1 Pro I am seeing that all devices still have the USB Power Management check in windows 8.1 but in FSX with PNW, and Bowerman addon, Carenado B200 - Joystick did not disconnect. The only crash I got was from latest FSUIPC 4.92. If in Windows 8.1 you have joystick disconnects, then just turn off all those power management features as listed in for Windows 8. Miscellaneous Info FSUIPC I have it installed but it Zero Joystick Configuration in all tests. I hope this helps everyone - as Windows 8.1 Pro definitely works fantastic with no joysticks issues so far. And Windows 8 works with all power management features individually turned off in all those sections listed. Have a great day, Skywolf
  5. Just upgraded to Windows 8.1. Now FSX repeatedly crashes, usually after I click any any option using the drop-down menus. I've tried running it in both Vista and Windows 7 compatibility modes. Here's the error info: Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14 Faulting module name: atiumdag.dll, version: 9.14.10.984, time stamp: 0x522fc960 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00024c81 Faulting process id: 0xd58 Faulting application start time: 0x01cecdbb18fa9ac8 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atiumdag.dll Report Id: 97046b5d-39ae-11e3-bea1-d43d7e38f527 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: Any help would be appreciated!
  6. Hi all! I had no problem running FSX on highest settings on Win 7. On Windows 8.1 Pro x64 I'm getting only about 20 fps, when I lower settings, it does not help, fps will increase only a little bit (about 5 fps). System specs are following: Fujitsu Siemens E754 laptop, i5 4200M 2.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, 2x 128GB SSD, Intel HD 4600 graphics. Any ideas guys? If duplicate topic, please don't get angry, I suck at searching. TY, Daniel
  7. Hey guys. I've been having issues playing FSX on my gaming PC. FSX would sometimes CTD for no obvious reason other than showing "Flight Simulator X has stopped working", and in worse cases, would cause a BSOD with "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" errors. Compatibility mode with Windows Vista SP2 was selected prior to FSX being started. FSX is the only game where this is occurred. Temps are cool and stable. Other games like Battlefield 3, Team Fortress 2 and PlanetSide 2 are all stable. Even FlightGear runs well. Here are my system's specs if it will help. CPU: Intel Core i7 4700MQ 2.4GHz - 3.4GHz boosted GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600 (integrated), NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB GDDR5 (discrete) RAM: 8GB Samsung DDR3L 1600MHz RAM OS: Windows 8.1 Update 1 I look forward to the reply of anyone here. Thanks.
  8. Hello, I'm trying to activate the 777 on FSX SP2 Windows 8.1. But I got this message after entering the serial: "Unable to connect to activation server" and few seconds later it shows "invalid serial number". How can I fix this? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Sauqy
  9. Dears, I bought the new computer with Windows 8.1 and PMDG738 NGX. I run the FSX as administrator and PMDG aircraft. I click the FMC box and key in some data (e.g. route). Once I completed the data input and return to normal screen, I can't use "Spacebar" and Mouse mid key for zoom in and out. Anybody has the same problem and would you please share with me how to solve? Thanks
  10. Hello Everyone, Just wanted to get a few facts from you guys about Prepar3D before i go and buy it. Recently given up with FSX temporary till i can work out the issue. Anyway back to P3d, basically i've been getting stack hash error's on FSX, so i'm hoping that p3d would work better and maybe not crash at all on my windows 8.1 Pro system. It's very good specs. (Specs on the forum post below). So need some information about if it will run crash free on my system. Secondly is i have the airbus X package and the PMDG 737 NGX, i was wondering if these 2 planes will run on p3d. I've heard things about the 737 and p3d but i thought its best to come here for you recommendations and setup information.. I intend buying the PMDG 777 also later this year. I just want to know if its a good stable idea for my windows 8.1 pro system and it won't keep BEX stack hashing me. Many thanks Bradley Russell You can check this out at: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/453386-fsx-dtc-help-windows-81-pro-crashing-please-losing-will-to-live-stackhashbex/page-2#entry3098305
  11. Hi, Which versions of FSX (Standard, Deluxe, Gold) are compatible with Windows 8.1? Link below says not Deluxe, but this sounds wrong to me... Also, link below mentions "version 10," but when shopping on eBay I mostly can't see a version number listed. Were there earlier versions? Can I tell from packaging? Thanks! --Prahas http://flyawaysimulation.com/news/4692/
  12. Hi, I am a long time user of MSFS and have bought a new Dell inspiron 15r with Windows 8 on it and have installed FSX on it. After finding out it keeps on crashing, I brought down the settings on everything except Graphics and Aircraft Quality but that didn't work. I tried uninstalling all freeware aircraft I had on FSX and sticking with all my payware planes but that didn't work. I installed the two Service Packs for FSX AND Tried updating to Windows 8.1 but even that didn't work. I love FSX but now it's becoming really frustrating  as it crashes whenever I save, load, start, end or accidentally crash into terrain. I have tried converting fsx.cfg into Fsx.orig but that made my computer really slow for 2 minutes. I have adequate RAM, Hard Drive Space and Video Card but it just doesn't work! How can I solve this? Thanks. ======================================= Computer Specs: Dell Inspiron 15R with Intel i7 Core with 2GHz and an AMD Radeon Graphics Card with 8GB RAM and 1TB Hard Drive Space (793GB Remaining).
  13. Often when I'm opening the FS-Actions menu in the FMC I get a CTD (crash-to-desktop). Most of the CTD's i get seem to be FMC related. Is there a way to fix this problem ? I'm using 737-800/900 NGX on Windows 8.1. Regards, Maurice Hamerslag
  14. Hi Guys. I have a issue with FS2Crew and my USB headset. I will try and provide as much info as I can, I have spent close on 5 hours trying to find the issue and no joy so far. Basically I have a clean install of windows 8.1 with FSX on a second hard disk. Windows defender etc will not scan the FSX hdd and UAC is off. I have FSX running great apart from when I start fs2crew. Thats when I get the issues and only with a USB headset. My rig has now got a AsRock Z87 extreme6 mobo with i5 4670k running at 4.3Ghz gt560 ti from asus running stock & 8 GB ram running also at stock 1600. its stable and has all the latest drivers. Re downloaded & installed all again from the Asrock website. I tried different USB ports and still get the same issues. I had a working Trust headset, but after windows 8.1 on some usb ports it gave a exclamation mark under device manager. So I got a new Plantronics 628 which installs on any port without errors. Same problem in FSX though. The FSX problem. When I get into fsx everything works fine, even if I use the USB headset for listening. As soon as I start Fs2Crew, thats when I get pauses or freezes from 2/3 seconds to even 30s to a minute or so. The previous trust headset was freezing much more regularly, so this headest is marginally better but still impossible to use at the moment. I have tried also to reinstall SP1c and also FS2Crew NGX and I have emergency but for now have just left it as NGX. I tested Emergency at the beginning and that also gave same results. So after I uninstalled I never got to reinstalling emergency NGX yet. No point if im having issues with the standalone NGX version. I also disabled all non used audio devices on the mobo and I disabled special utilities that were supposed to make the usb devices transfer data faster (Xfast usb) I have never had problems with usb headset and Fs2Crew before on my old rig, In fact its always worked fantastically!! so im guessing it is an issue to me and my hardware. But I really do not know what else to try? Many Thanks, Regards, Mark Fernandez

  16. Hello all. I keep doing a flight in the pmdg 737 ngx or any aircraft for that matter and on odd times it will crash which will then force vpilot to give me this messege. It happens more on the pmdg than the a320 by aerosoft. By this point my CPU has pretty much gone to 100% when it has crashed. Sometimes it just freezes and you can only hear the sounds. I have no option but to ctrl alt del. I would really appreciate it if somebody could help me through this error as it is actually a real problem. All I want is to fly vatsim without being worried about the whole thing crashing. Addons. Some UK 2000 free scenery Vpilot Efass Aerosoft airbus X Pmdg 737 ngx Here's Problem: http://oi62.tinypic.com/2isa1af.jpg Computer Specs: Intel Core i5-3570k CPU : 3.40GHz 8gb of Ram GeForce GTX 660 Ti Windows 8.1 Pro Thank you in advanced.
