How do I program this SID procedure?

Featured Replies

Hello!I am trying to write a SID file for KBOS, and would like to know how I can implement the following procedure:Runway 22L/R: Immediate turn left heading 140There are no navaids given in the description or any fixes. Please keep in mind that I'd like a SID for the 777 only, as I know that the 757 has added functions not available in the 777. Thanks!Mitul

Mitul,There are two things to consider: 1) what is "realistic" in terms of how the aircrew will interpret the "turn immediately" instruction, and 2) the fact that unless LNAV "captures" the route - you will have to turn the aircraft manually anyway.I have solved it as follows:Regarding 1) the aircrew would not initiate a turn until it was "safe" to do so. I would suggest implementing something like ONHDG 200 HDG 140. That means maintain runway heading until climbing through 200 ft, then turn heading 140.Regarding 2) since you have put the ONHDG instruction as part of the SID the LNAV can be enabled prior to starting the takeoff roll and will then capture it automatically - the aircraft will then fly the SID as specified.Through experimentation I have found that without the ONHDG command, the LNAV path is draw from the approach end of the departure runway rather than from the departure end of the departure runway. This means that once you are gear up and climbing out - you are already off course and must manually turn towards the LNAV path to engage LNAV.Hope this helps - -michael

Michael,Thanks so much for your response. Although I haven't had a chance to try out your suggestions, I see that they make a lot more sense that what I've been trying to do. I'll let you know how things go...and probably upload the KBOS procedures if anyone's interested.Mitul

Michael,I tried inserting the following line into the SID Procedures:SID LOGAN2.R22 RNW 22R RNW 22L ONHDG 200 HDG 140Unfortunately, the PMDG777 FMC gives an ERROR AT HDG, LINE 27 prompt.I suspect this is becuase the 777 cannot accept the HDG command...maybe it was implemented in the 757 release? Could PMDG or anyone else clarify this, and possibly offer a solution? Thank you.Mitul

>Michael, >>I suspect this is becuase the 777 cannot accept the HDG >command...maybe it was implemented in the 757 release? I think you are right. I'll see if I can dig up the 777 manual because the SID/STAR grammar is in the back. I have not been flying the 777 since release of the 757 and I don't know if I still have the manual on-line.-michael

Michael,Any luck? Thanks.P.S.: Can someone from PMDG help on this?

>Michael, >>Any luck? Thanks. >No not yet. Would you believe, I am right now sitting in a room on the 12th floor of the HarborSide Hyatt, observing departures flying the SID you are trying to program! (There's an A340 taxing out to depart on 4R as I type!)Anyway - I will not be able to check further until I return home tomorrow night.-michael
