Frame Rates 101

Featured Replies

Hi guys, this is not a whine or moan. Maybe just an opinion but I think it more factual than percieved.I notice many seem to obsess over frame rates in MSFS, any version. Now, the blunt truth is that fps do not determine enjoyable flight. Of much greater importance is smoothness and/or a lack of pauses and stutters. A target fps of 16 will appear smooth if there are no stutters.Think of it like this, the human eye cannot detect the difference between 20 fps and 30. 16 is about the point where you might notice a difference. Sorry, it's just anatomy, anything you notice over 20 fps is just percieved. This is important because the higher you set target frame rate, the more resources FS uses to try and maintain that. The negative impact is you will loose graphic quality, some objects may not be drawn, the forward terrain will not be drawn smoothly, objects appear suddenly, etc. Get the drift?A complex ad-on a/c will suffer if the target fps is set too high.My advice is to try locking to 16-18 fps and see if that helps your flight.Offered for shooting down, but be gentle.Robert

Robert,I agree with you. Also, Microsoft should have never made it so easy to see the FPS. Some people seem more concerned about what FPS they get than actually flying. If they have a real smooth flight but the FPS counter says something lower than they were expecting, they are disappointed - I could never quite work that out.

Your sig is scaring me! :-)Robert

Rob,LOL - I was going to point out that my sig had nothing to do with you. Unless you have turned into a muppet since the last time we spoke? If that is the case - be afraid.
