Can I fly a "VOR DME ARC" with the FMC?

Featured Replies

Hi, PMDG737 flyers...There is not a STAR for my destination airport, so, I want to use a procedure for the arrival that includes a "VOR DME ARC" segment, a couple of waypoints, to finally intercept the ILS LOC.Is it possible to fly a "VOR DME ARC" with the FMC? If so, what have I to do, to add a "VOR DME ARC" as part of my route?I want not replace the STAR with a "Instrument Aproach and Landing" procedure (I know this works not so). I just want fly a "VOR DME ARC" segment with the FMC, as a final part of my route. Thanks in advance for any help...Dirk Trotteyn (SANT)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/35202.jpg

Hi!You can fly a DME ARC with the FMC!You have to use the FIX-function on the FMC, you can add waypoint that are defined by their radial and distance to a VOR.For example, the fix before you intercept the localiser would be on radial 350, distance 25 from the CBA VOR.You have to put these values into the FIX page on the FMC. You then have to press LSK2 (I think) to put the fix into the scratchpad. Afterwards you can put it into the LEGS page. Proceed with the other fixes (like CBA/300/25, CBA/248/25 and so on).The ND will show you the DME ARC if you have defined enough fixes.regards,Joerg

A reasonably accurate way to program in a DME arc is to insert a series of radial/distance waypoints that define the arc, every 5 to ten degrees of arc. Since that's primarily how an instrument pilot flies by hand (get on the arc, reset the OBS 10 degrees, fly the DME gauge until the needle centers, reset the OBS 10 degrees, repeat), it works pretty well.In your case, I'd add the following waypoints as shown below:CBA248/25 /11000CBA260/25 /11000CBA270/25 /11000CBA280/25 /11000CBA290/25 /11000CBA300/25 /9000CBA310/25 /9000CBA320/25 /9000and so on until you get to CBA300/25, at which point the LOC intercept should take over from LNAV.

Hi, Joerg hi, TimothyThanks for yor fast response.I put hands on this right now. Will comment... I am using this forum as the main source for learning. Thanks for help.Regards.Dirk Trotteyn (SANT)

Hi, Joerg hi, TimothyA little (or big) more help, please.I defined the fixes (waypionts) in the FIX-function page. But I can enter no more than 6 fixes. There are two FIX pages and three spaces in each page; LSK2, LSK3 and LSK4 (LSK5 is ocupied with "B) How do I transform the created FIXES into WAYPOINTS?c) Can create more fixes (waypoints)in the existing FIX INFO pages?d) Where do I input the corresponding ALTITUDE? (CBA350/25 "/9000").Thanks in advance...Dirk Trotteyn (SANT)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/35222.jpg

Dirk add these to your legs page, they are called place, bearing distance waypoints(PBD)You can then define the altitude in the legs page. You will then see the waypoints around the green DME fix.

Hi, Joerg, hi Timothy, hi WallaceI get it working! And fine!I did so:a) In FIX page in LSK 1L typed VOR name (CBA).:( In scratchpad typed RAD/DIST. Pressed LSK 2L, then LSK 2L again to write back to the scratchpad.c) Went to LEGS page, pressed the next empty LSK xL entrance. Will automaticaly enter CBA01, CBA02 etc. in the route.d) In RTE LEGS page in the right CDU side entered SPEED/ALTITUDE.e) Idem for all the rest waypoints. Thanks again. I appreciate any other idea respect this.Dirk Trotteyn (SANT)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/35227.jpg

to save switching back and forth from the FIX page to the LEGS page, you can enter a waypoint/radial/distance right into the LEGS page.for example, on the LEGS page, put CBA248/25 in the scratchpad, and then LSK the line where you want to add the waypoint. It'll get added as CBA01, etcJust a way to save time.

Hi, TimothyI appreciate your help.Yes, it save a good time. Am happy how VOR DME ARC works!. Here in Argentina the navaids are scarce, so this kind of aproaches are very common here. Thanks again for your good help.Dirk Trotteyn (SANT)
