September 7, 200322 yr In the course of developing my tutorial, I've come up on a couple of issues.==================================================================Background:Flight is from KSTL to KCLT, viaLINDY2.MAW BNA VXV.SHINE3 at FL330.Crossing MAW (at FL330 in cruise), I need to accomodate the following clearance:Depart MAW hdg 130, intercept the BNA 260 to BNA, rest of route unchanged.I tried to do this two ways, with LNAV INTC CRS, and by using the nav radios and VOR LOC.====================================================================First attempt, as I crossed MAW I went from LNAV to HDG SEL (130), then I went into the FMC LEGS page. BNA was active but of course the active route was behind me. So I selected BNA, put it back into 1L, and put in the 080 intercept course on 6R, and then EXEC'ed it. It looked ok (080 was the course above BNA in 1L), but the course line was still behind me, not ahead of me as I'd expected, and when I went back to LNAV mode, the airplane flew along at 130, then turned left way to early and appeared to be trying to go back to the original course line. Sure enough, when I looked at the LEGS page, 080 was no longer the course to BNA.I know a workaround for this, by creating an additional waypoint (BNA260/200 would work) before BNA, which would move the course line ahead of the airplane, but as far as I can tell, the FMC's supposed to create that line and fire it over the horizon automatically. So I hope this is a known issue and will be fixed in SU2.=====================================================================Second attempt, I figured I'd be clever and use the VHF NAV radios and track the radial that way. So as I left MAW on HDG SEL (130), I tuned BNA on NAV 1, set the inbound course to 080, and armed VOR LOC.The intercept went well, but when the aircraft started to turn, I got an FMC message APPROACH VREF NOT SELECTED, and the VNAV system thought it was time to descend, I got the vertical path deviation indicator, but the T/D was no longer calculated.Does using the VOR tracking function of the autopilot make the FMC think it should be in the approach phase? I'm going to try going to HDG SEL/ALT HOLD instead of HDG SEL/VNAV next time and see if that works better.===================================================================End result is that I'm going to leave LNAV course intercepts out of the tutorial, at least until either it's fixed or I understand what I'm doing wrong.Best wishes.
September 7, 200322 yr "Does using the VOR tracking function of the autopilot make the FMC think it should be in the approach phase?"I believe this has been mentioned before, Tim. Try the Search function (using VOR/LOC or something similar perhaps, as a keyword).Cheers.Ian.P.S. Sorry, can't help you with the other one.
September 7, 200322 yr Both items are fixed and will be ok in SU2There is (search forum for more details) a bug occuring in some circumstances in the INTC calc mathsTuning a VOR will force descent phase. Should not :-(...anthonyAnthony MertonPrecision Manuals Developmenthttp://www.precisionmanuals.com

September 9, 200322 yr Can you delay SU2 for a month or so, so I'll get a break on the tutorial development?:-hang Don't worry, as soon as you think you are finished, Anthony will add something. I went through this with the Fly! 777. Then you'll have to add 3.0 for the new systems in the 8/9 then the 4.0 for the BBJ ... face it, you are Mr.T now! :-lolRay

Eventually he'll get it so well I'll just stick to the basics and point everyone to the Bulfer manual.
September 10, 200322 yr I'm waiting for the HUD tutorial ;)Tough to land on that little CV off KSFO without it :-lolRay
