October 14, 200322 yr hibe sure, i have searched the forum for this, but haven't found a topic for it.i have two questions regarding the GPWS on the 737NG:1. is it correct that i get an "glideslope" warning even when i'm ABOVE g/s?2. it's pretty confusing to get an "caution, terrain" callout below 2500 feet with landing gear still up, because i observed RL pilots to retract the gear much later.i know, there is no "GPWS override switch" or so, i don't know if the 737 -600-700s have one in the real world, but i've seen G/S- and flap-warning "deactivate-switches" on the 737-300 and 767. right?thanks for any replies, stuPS: what are runway-turnoff lights for? seriously, i don't have a clue...
October 15, 200322 yr >1. is it correct that i get an "glideslope" warning even when>i'm ABOVE g/s?Hi, Stu.This is correct. Only below G/S deviations should trigger thiswarning.>2. it's pretty confusing to get an "caution, terrain" callout>below 2500 feet with landing gear still up, because i observed>RL pilots to retract the gear much later.I believe SU-2 will address this problem(?). The "CautionTerrain" callout is generated by a specific module/subsectionof an "Enhanced" GPWS computer (relating to "terrainawareness"). The terrain awareness module looks at terrainahead of, as well as below the aircraft)The callout sounds when the aircraft is within 60 seconds ofhitting terrain. There is a gear lever input tothe logic for the "terrain awareness" side of the EGPWS, but Ihave been unable to find out what it's function is ("CautionTerrain" messages should sound irrespective of airplaneconfiguration..... e.g if you are flying directly at the peak ofMount Everest, gear up/down or flaps up/down, you shouldhear an aural warning). I'd say that the modelling of EGPWSis somewhat simplified in PMDG, but hopefully, just by adjustingthe sensitivity of the warnings, it should become more realistic. I don't believe PMDG looks at thehorizontal component of terrain closure, so, in terms of verticalclosure rate, I think that a CAUTION TERRAIN aural should onlybe triggered by at least double the current rate).>i know, there is no "GPWS override switch" or so, i don't know>if the 737 -600-700s have one in the real world, but i've seen>G/S- and flap-warning "deactivate-switches" on the 737-300 and>767. right? The latest 737's have FLAP, GEAR and TERR Inhibit switches.(Sorry, no pics... I'm having modem problems)>PS: what are runway-turnoff lights for? They illuminate the areas to the left and right of the aircraft so thatthe pilots can see taxiways (and hence, where to "turn off" therunway) ;-)Hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.
October 15, 200322 yr hi ian, thanks so much for your precise answer. yes, that helped a lot.greets, stu
