I was reading on the web that this software contains spyware. Anyone have good alternatives for a download accelerator?

www.getright.comSpyware free. It's shareware but the trial is fully functional.It takes some tweaking to get it to auto-resume, because PMDG's servers report "HTTP 403.9 - Access Forbidden" which it thinks is an error. However, digging through the config settings you can get it to keep trying automatically.
