high approach speeds for 737

Featured Replies

HI all, since I have been flying the 737Ng I have noticed that the approach spesds seem unusually high regardless of the landing weight ogf the aircraft. For instance today i fly the -800 series and set the fuel so that I would land with about 2000 lbs in the tanks (not very realistic I realize but so what!) ZFW 126000 lbs set. the FMC calculated an approach speed of 141 knots with flaps 30 set. I do not doubt for a moment that these figures are correct but I am surprised at the high speed given the relative light weight of the aircraft vs. a 767 which if my memory serves me correct when I flew the PIC 767 would give approach speeds around 130 knots for a typical landing weight for the -67. does the high approach speeds have to do with the effectiveness of the flaps or is the 737 simply a very "slippery" aircraft that is simply difficcult to slow down (as I have found on the few flight I have done-especially innthe stretch series) appreciate any feedback onnthis issue especially from the real world -37 drivers out there. thanks, J Stevens CYOW

G'day JYou will find the 73 series all have a very high wing loading in comparison to the 76 which is itself a big glider,in particular the 200 series. The wing on the 800 is a pretty highly loaded unit as can be seen by its enormous vortex production when in moist air.You can often see approach speeds in the 7 at light weights around the 120kt mark as the wing is a very good lifter and not heavily loaded like the 73.Hope this helps.Darren Howie
