Landing 737 NG

Featured Replies

I have attempted to land this a/c without the FMC. I get establised on the VOR and approach the glide slope from below as guided by others in the answers on this site. I become establised on the g;lide slope with "Green" indicated in all 3 Flight mode annunciators. The a/c follows the GS to around 1000 ft and then starts to climb again in line with the VOR but leaving the GS. So apart from not having the FMC in operation I follow the instruction in the manual Pg 41Any one had this problem or what am I doing wrong?Tony Price

Ok, first of all-you're flying an ILS. Not a vor-you'd be surprised by the differences. The FMC is not involved with an ILS approach other than to calculate the landing speeds according to the aircraft weights. My procedure involves setting VREF on the FMC APP page as I pass 6000ft(sometimes before, somtimes after) and consulting my landing speeds. You seem to be getting yourself setup fine on the ILS, but make sure that you have APP mode selected so it will follow both the LOC and the GS.You should plan to cross the threshhold at Vref+5 KIAS, so follow the flaps retraction schedule,be sure not to extend the flaps too fast and the Minimum speed which you should fly is VREF+5 with your flaps fully retracted to either 30 or 40,whichever you selected....In summary, you could well be nearly stalling the aircraft so the TO/GO kicks in to prevent this.Try the above and let me know-hope it works ;)John http://homepage.eircom.net/~eamonnmca/images/logo_ba.JPGwww.bavirtual.co.uk Senior Captain Simflight.com Staff Reviewer

The TO/GO button should be used as soon as soon as you think you might go stalling or want to make a go around, right? Not during a normal decent, right?

The TOGA mode is used whenever a Go around is commenced by the Pilot flying. If the aircraft senses that it's close to stall,it automatically activated the TOGA mode and the Pilot will proceed with the Missed approach procedures.TOGA mode is NOT used in a normal descent.John http://homepage.eircom.net/~eamonnmca/images/logo_ba.JPGwww.bavirtual.co.uk Senior Captain Simflight.com Staff Reviewer
