use as high of res as your monitor can take, i use 1024 but i usethe 16 bit version so i get better frames.

The hedge answer is "the highest res that gives you acceptable frame rates" so it depends a lot on your horsepower. For me, I go with 1600x1200 and leave the AA off. On my old 800Mhz system, I kept it down to 1024x768.
