VNAV climb rate behaviour

Featured Replies

Hi,Question here.Lemme just emphasize i'm not asking about the actual climb performance of the 767...but the VNAV climb behaviour.Lets say there are 3 waypoints 2000ft 5000ft 7000ftAfter hitting waypoint 1 at 2000 feet the PIC will immediately and as fast as she can climb to 5000ft...then level out till waypoint 2..and then do the same thing and go for 7000ft.Isn't there, or shouldn't there, be a way to limit the climbrates?Aksing because sometimes in for example SIDs there are limits on climb rates like climb at 300' per NM to point xx then 350' per NM to point xx.The only way this is possible right now is to not engage VNAV and do it by hand.

EDIT: Didn't read your question properly....the only way I know it to manually limit your climb rate by using the VERT SPD window on the MCP. Or you can limit your climb rate by selecting CLB2 on the Thrust Rating Panel but that probably will still exceed the vertical speed you want.

I think those are minium climb rates for standard instrument departures.

Yep, you're right..Still wonder though if the this FMC will take programmed climb rates in real life.Cheerios

In climb, VNAV will give you all the thrust it can, until it captures the next altitude. This is probably a safety thing (for ground clearance). Similarly, in descent, VNAV will give you idle down to the first height restriction. However, from then on, it should give you more of a non-stepped flight path.Speed dictates the climb, but path is taken into consideration in descent. If you think that the customers will be adversely affected by this climb behaviour and company policy doesn't prohibit it, use all the tools available to you (V/S, Thrust Derates, FLCH, etc).Cheers.Ian.
