Auxiliary Panel Check?

Featured Replies

Hi I was just looking at a 767-cockpit picture and noticed the Auxiliary Panel on the right side of the cockpit. I know you can't see this panel in PIC but do pilots press every switch on there during the scan check on the real 767 to test equipment during the first flight of the day? Or is the Panel for maintenance use only? Thank You. :-)

(Post edited now that Ian has posted a pic)Start at the top left.Test switches-maintenance only.Moving down left column....Green Squib Test Panel-F/O carries out test 1 and 2, green lights light up (note that in test 2 the APU light does NOT light up).Gen Field Man Reset Switches-Maintenance get ###### if you ever touch these.Flt Control Shutoff-Check all are guarded, and not pressed.Leak Test-Check all are in "norm" position.Lighting-Obvious.Top of Second column.Flight Recorder-Norm (note OFF light will remain until engine start).Service Interphone-Off.Bulk Cargo Heat-As Required (Vent if live animals in bulk hold).EICAS Maint-Dont touch.Reserve Brakes and Steering-Check guarded.Mic Selector-Obvious (this is the same as the Cpt and F/O mic selectors).Top of Third column.E/E Cooling Monitor-Dont touch.Top of Fourth Column.Oxy Mask-CheckGoggles-Present.The white thing on top of the Fuelling manual is a spare roll of paper for the ACARS printer. The door to the right of the Fuelling manual houses the Quick Access Recorder (QAR).

Or is the >Panel for maintenance use only?I'll have to let the pilots answer this one, "November", but here's a shot which may jog their memories ;-)http://www.ozemail.com.au/~iriddell/767/767TestPanel1.jpgIncidentally, there are some switches here which would seem to me to be clearly Maintenance-only, such as the Test panel in the top left hand corner, and the EICAS Maint panel (with the five black square switches) in the middle. Also, I don't think that the pilots would need to touch the GEN MAN FIELD RESET switches either, or the FLIGHT CONTROL SHUTOFF switches unless something exceptionally abnormal was happening in flight. Also, the pilots would, presumably, check that the black guarded switches and the switches with clear plastic covers are in the right positions. At the top (middle), the Flight Recorder switch should be in NORM position (= auto on). The Service Interphone should be off for flight. This parallels the service interphone system with the flight interphone system, so that during maintenance, an engineer at say, the main gear wheel well can speak to someone in the cockpit (The 767 has dozens of service interphone jacks inside and outside the aircraft). As for the rest of the switches, I leave this to the pilots to answer ;-)Cheers.Ian.

Thank you both for that great info and the pic it is very informative. I noticed on that pic those headphone jacks on the bottom of the Auxiliary Panel. Is this where the pilot and copilot headsets connect to or is it for a 3rd person sitting in the jump seat? Thank You.

It's the (second?) observer's audio panel.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

Thats the first oberservers audio panel :-)The second observer sits behind the captain, and simply has a jack that allows him to plug into the F/O's or First Observers panel, he doesn't get a panel of his own.

Where do the Pilots connect their headsets? I am looking at a pic of the audio panel on the pedestal but I don't see their jacks.:-)

>(Post edited now that Ian has posted a pic)I'll try and be a bit quicker next time, HP :-hah Looks like you were posting yours as I was composing mine. >The door to the right of the Fuelling manual houses the >Quick Access Recorder (QAR).Finding the QAR behind here is inversely proportional to how busy/tired the engineer is. When he is busy/tired, the QAR will inevitably found in the MEC instead... and the routine "changing of the QAR data disk" will involve struggling into the Main Equipment Centre (MEC) through the external underbelly hatch behind the nose gear (This can be especially strenuous if you haven't got a ladder: Actually, climbing into the MEC without a ladder has recently been outlawed.... probably due to the number of people falling from the MEC... or, perhaps because one engineer, when looking for a foothold, accidentally kicked the buttons on the back of the nose gear and fired off the APU fire bottle! All in a day's work (No, it wasn't me, honest!).Cheers.Ian.

Pilot jacks are on the window side of their seats, next to the all important cup holder and shoulder heaters :-)

Why is the first observer on the right and the second observer on the left? :-)Are you sure it isn't an option to have more audio panels installed? In my manual there's an audio panel and oxygen mask behind the captain's seat, on the left sidewall panel.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

>Why is the first observer on the right and the second >observer on the left? :-)A better view perhaps, Martin? :-)The first obs seat is more towards the center of the cockpit rather than on the far right. The 2nd Obs seat is stuck right next to the window, almost directly behind the captain's seat (a great view of the back of the captain's head ;-)).The 747-400 has a similar seat setup, with same names, but the 747 Classic has an F/E's seat instead of a 1st Obs (on the right hand side) and First and Second Observers seats (both on the left hand side). >Are you sure it isn't an option to have more audio panels >installed? In my manual there's an audio panel and oxygen >mask behind the captain's seat, on the left sidewall panel. I don't think anyone mentioned options ;-) Yes, there are several 767 airlines with a fourth Audio Selector Panel (can't recall which ones tho').The simple headphone panel at the 2nd Obs position has been known to cause problems with front seat comms. If the headset plug is not inserted properly, it can stop the F/O or Captain receiving audio (It has been known to catch some engineers off guard... including myself... After they've pulled pulled half the front pilot's comms system to bits trying to find the problem, some smart@ss simply pulls the headset plug out of the 2nd obs jack, fixing the problem in seconds :-)). Cheers.Ian.
