November 6, 200223 yr Hi, I was wondering how do you read the trim scale? It does not explain it in the manual. It has numbers from 0-12 and when you shut down the Hydraulics it goes to 6 units. Is 6 units the neutral position for the stabilizer and 6-12 is up and 0-6 is down? :-) Thank You.
November 6, 200223 yr "Is 6 units the neutral position for the stabilizer and 6-12 is up and 0-6 is down?"Hi, November...I'm no expert on the subject, but, according to my notes, 2 units is regarded as the neutral position (i.e. when the stabiliser centerline is in line with the fuselage). Note that there are different up/down stabiliser movement limits depending on the position of the flapsI'm slightly surprised that the stabiliser is resetting to 6 units with hydraulics switched off in PIC. With hydraulics off, the stabiliser should be locked in whatever position it was in at the time (there is an automatic brake to stop it moving under airloads in flight if hydraulics are lost). What I found interesting in my notes was a section on the 767-200... Apparently, when the stabilizer is positioned between 8.5 and 14.2 units, the control column is physically moved aft by an "elevator neutral shift mechanism" to change the elevator neutral from faired to a maximum of 5.8deg UP (at 14.2 units). I don't know, however, if the pilots can feel/see this during flight(???). Presumably, the 767-300 has different trim/elevator requirements which doesn't require this mechanism.Anyway, hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.
November 11, 200223 yr Back to the original question, the trim scale is simply measured in 'units'. Due to the number of performance factors changed with each small change in trim, it would be impractacle and really useless to denote the scale with any other kind of unit. Now, what good is it? Well, I cant say for sure on the B767, but on the B744, the FMC will provide a CG and Trim setting (in units) for Takeoff which you as the pilot can set.I believe it is the same on the B767 but again, I cant really say for sure...Hope it helped,Safe Skies!--Jackelb
November 11, 200223 yr As far as I know the 767 FMC that the PIC-team has modelled doesn't have a CG and trim facility. (see page 87 of Bulfer's guide - for the die hards)Kind regards,Stephan Haas
