PIC crashing to desktop :-(

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, to my disappointment the 767 crashes to the desktop every single time I try to pick my STAR on the FMC. My routine is normally to build my flightplan in FSBuild and load it up. I only purchased PIC yesterday but I am quite familiar with FMC operation fom other add-ons of admittedly lesser functionality. Anyway my system specs (If that is useful)are:850 Duron, 390MB DDR RAM, GeForce4 4200 on a W2K OS.Any help would be grately appreciated!Happy simming,

hi,i've had it as well, with me it happened because the star wasn't properly set up,and also if your last waypoint is the waypoint the star starts on it happens, example:if you were flyin' to boston and would select the gdm2 arr while gdm was already in your waypoint list, the sim will crash, you'll have to check that before executing the star...also,some of the stars available for download have little faults in them, which causes the same effect as having the first star waypoint in your route...hope it helpsblue skies mateTom van der Elst

Hi Tom,thanks for the reply,I guess what you say makes sense. I wonder if the same logic applies for SIDS also...Actually I was investigating the possibility that the cause of the crash might have been the fact that I have extracted all the Navdata SIDs in the PIC Folder (some 15.000 of them) so it takes the FMC quite some time to process them all to the point that it will just freeze on you. I will follow your advice and see what happens.Again thanks a lot! Take care!

Vassilis,The star problem is an old one. Tom's remarks are right, but sometimes it still crashes. If you pick your star first and then the runway there's less chance of a crash.Performancewise it's better to manage the sid/star directories with a small program called "Sid Star Copier" by Mats Johansson. You can find it on Avsim. It's a windows "version" of Plantrip. Both programs move the sids/stars you need for a flight in the right directory. Kind regards,Stephan Haas

Hi stephan,Thanks for the info! I will try your tip and I am d/ling Mat's program right now..!Well I guess the (already extensive)list of things to do before starting a flight has grown one bigger...Many thanks,

Vassilis,Be sure to execute the sid/star copy before you enter the plane (start up FS with the PIC panel)Kind regards,Stephan Haas

>some of the stars available for download have little >faults in them, which causes the same effect as having the >first star waypoint in your route... This is exactly why he's crashing (and why I refuse to use 3rd party SID/STARS in general :) The FMC is not very fault-tolerant when it comes to malformed SIDs and STARs and there are too many bogus ones running about out there. If you find such a particular STAR that is giving you trouble, your best recourse is to program the STAR manually yourself and save it over the one you downloaded.J

hi there,no thanks needed mate...this hobby just keeps getting better :-)glad i could be of service...btw,i allways program my sids and stars manually....ever since i've had no problems whatsoever...but the program suggested works like a charm...see yaTom van der ElstUhhhh.....well i've got no fancy line to type down here....if you know one....let me know...maybe i'll look smarter then *:-*DASH 7 FOREVER! :-bla

Ok,last question: Is there any difference in programming SIDS/STARS with PIC Editor than doing it straight in the FMC as far as chance of crashing is considered?Cheers,

hi,i'd say the chance of crashing is bigger when using pic editor...i don't use it because the stars my sim crashed on were created using that tool...i suspect it is a users issue, because most people use it to their satisfaction..when i program the sid or star,i start at the first waypoint of the sid/star that's not in my route...i've not had a crash in a year, guess i'm lucky :-)also,it helps me understand flying sid/star and app better, because i can now specify the radial etc in the sid...hope it helpssee ya mateTom van der ElstUhhhh.....well i've got no fancy line to type down here....if you know one....let me know...maybe i'll look smarter then *:-*DASH 7 FOREVER! :-bla

I just program the STARS straight into the FMC as I need them. A good online resource and 5 minutes of your time is about all it takes (you don't even need to program all the transitions if you don't want), and you will at least have the assurance that the FMC isn't going to tank on you. There are some older versions of FSBuild and PIC Editor running around which people are using - and they can generate bogus flight plans.J
