HOW CAN I CALCULATE VREF IN ADVANCE??

Featured Replies

Hello, I was just wondering if there is any way that I could calculate in advance what the Vref would be at landing. I know the FMC shows the speeds an the approach page, but the Vref keeps changing as the plane gets lighter so how can you know what the V speed will be in advance when you start the approach briefing? I have seen real world airline videos and during the briefing the captain mentions Vref speed. Is that what the speed will be on landing? Or do they keep updating the Vref speed on the FMC as the plane gets lighter? If so I see no reason to mention the Vref in the briefing if the captain has to keep updating the Vref in the Vref page. Thank You.:-wave

I flew from PANC to KSLC the other day and in mid cruise VREF was 133, by the time the approach was near, it had only dropped to 130. I think when the approach briefing is being conducted, they're close enough to not have to worry about it changing anymore.

Well really all you have to do is to enter estimated landing weight into the FMC's Init Ref page and that will give you Vref for the approach. The only thing that is going to change is the fuel load so it's relatively easy to calculate approx landing weight(or you can take a look at the dispatch release)Any unexpected delays such as weather, wind, long holds etc will result in a greater fuel burn than anticipated which in turn will result in a change in Vref.Christian.

Get some charts is the best advice I can give. Once upon a blue moon, PMDG had a professional AOM for the 767 you could download. That's what I use.J

Where can one find that Jason?

Hi, November.Just add your ZFW (on your FMC "PERF" page) to your fuel at DESTination. The fuel at DESTination can be found on your PROGRESS page (e.g the fuel value at KBOS, or whatever your destination is). This will give you a Gross Weight which you can manually enter on your APPROACH page.Hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.

Jase, was that a free file? If so, mind sending it to me? Thanks

I honestly can't remember, but it seems like I paid some nominal charge for it...$5 or $10, maybe? You might toss a post out in the PMDG forum and see what they say about it.J
