January 15, 200323 yr Hello again, I noticed the PIC Non Normal Procedures manual does not mention if every emergency requires diversion except for maybe Engine Failure and Cabin Decompression. Does every failure result in a diversion? Or are there some failures that a pilot can accept in flight with which a flight can continue to its destination? If so which ones? Thank You. :-)
January 15, 200323 yr HiI think each failure is weighed up when it happens, with all of the options being weighed up before a decision is made. Of course there will always be some defects on any 767 at any one time that the pilots would be aware of, but it doesn't stop them from flying eg if one of the packs failed, you could still fly but be limited to FL350 on the flight etc.I'm sure you'll get a better answer off HPSOV or Bill Ball, people who are paid to know these things .
January 15, 200323 yr Engine failures would assure a diversion, unless your destination is the best place to go, then technically it wouldn't be a diversion.Anyway, it's really up to the situation. If it's safer to divert than to fly on, a diversion will occur. If it's not dangerous, things like economics, how to get the pax to the destination, is there adequate maintenance, if not: will the aircraft be allowed to return to base, all these will come into play.Iz
January 16, 200323 yr The types of non-normals that would require a diversion would be any form of fire indication (engine/cargo), an ETOPS critical system failure (Engine failure, electrical bus failure, 2 hydraulic systems or 2 generators fail), and any other obvious ones such as a depressurisation. Other than that with most non-normals it is fine to continue to destination, bearing in mind the type of maintenance facilities available. No use getting to destination with a problem that cant be fixed that also prevents the aircraft from dispatch!A lot of the time it comes down to the captain to decide how to handle a particular problem, taking into consideration many different factors.(And on that pack off example above... if you dispatch with a pack inop you are restricted to FL350, if a pack fails in-flight there are no restrictions)
