February 18, 200422 yr HiDoes anyone have any photographs of a 767 with the PVD system fitted? BA have this system fitted but unfortunately there is a lack of good quality, detailed pictures available on the world wide web. I have some tech manual drawings here and of course my memory (I think) but a photo would be good.Anyone know of any other carriers with PVD installed? It seems Qantas uninstalled this on their leased BA 767's, along with modifying a lot of things eg RMI moved, clock moved, A/P buttons installed (instead of switches) - anyone know the reason behind this? Presumably fleet commonality? Thanks
February 18, 200422 yr "....anyone know the reason behind this? Presumably fleet commonality?"Yes. This equates to savings in maintenance (no spares required to be stocked), savings in pilot and engineer training, etc...Why do you need a photo, Tom? All the PVD is, is rotating striped cylinder visible via a slot in the glareshield (and, of course, the associated on/off/test/brightness button). Not unlike the ones found on 744's...http://members.ozemail.com.au/~b744er/Jb31FOPVD.jpgCheers.Ian.
February 18, 200422 yr Thanks Ian - v helpful.I'm making my own mods to the PIC panel to make it look as much like a BA 767 as possible hence why I asked for the photograph. Are all PVD's orange d'ya know? I thought I remembered British Airways one with a white barbers pole?Cheers
February 18, 200422 yr 'Para-visual display', it's used on low visibility takeoffs. It uses the localiser signal to give the pilot left and right commands to remain on the centreline.Interestingly SQ006 had the PVD on whilst taking off on the wrong runway....it was indicating turn left throughout the takeoff!
February 18, 200422 yr Good gracious. Interesting stuff Joseph.Liam - it's located on the glareshield. Above the PFD on the pic panel.
February 19, 200422 yr "Are all PVD's orange d'ya know? I thought I remembered British Airways one with a white barbers pole?"It's not really an orange colour, Tom, but the "warm" incandescent lighting of the bulbs in the PVD (incandescent bulbs have a warmer, yellower tone than normal sunlight). The PVD's use a combination of IRS and Localizer data. The PVD has a black shutter which opens when the aircraft is close to the runway centerline and at a certain angle to the runway centerline. The shutter recloses on liftoff (I recall in response to a 5' Radio Altitude signal?).I seem to recall a discussion on the PS1 forum about this, but I can't remember if it usable during rollout (after landing). My notes on these devices are not too clear.Cheers.Ian.
