August 24, 200421 yr For those of you that have flown the 767-300 level D sim, what technique did you use? The questions that I have are as follows and pertain to takeoff practice:1. What was your Gross Take-off Weight? Would you fill the left and right tanks to say 80 percent each with the center dry to give you a gross take-off wgt of approx. 309M LBs. I find that the lighter the aircraft is, it's much harder to manage a decent takeoff profile holding the V2+15, V2+25 requirements before accel.height on the ASI..2. Did you hand-fly the a/c to a specific attitude when practicing takeoff's or did you use the N1 method with the autopilot engaged [with or without derates] etc.,and if so, when did you activate the autopilot. I have found this method rather complex as the aircraft climbs rather fast and you have to be quick at pushing the climb button on the TMC panel or you will blow right by the accel height & speed. Using this method, I also have to bug up the ref. speed to the flaps up or 250 mark and without a co-pilot, this seems to be a big obstacle. Things happen too quickly using the autopilot engagement..unless of course I am doing something way wrong. BTW, Is the spd mode supposed to illuminated to V2 when you 'engage' the CMD button after reaching 400 ft?? I think this could be my problem because everything else seems to be in order. The hdg mode holds the departure rwy heading and the v/s activates and you can increase or decrease this function to maintain V2+15/25 but when the spd mode kicks in and illuminates the V2 MCP take-off speed, the speed starts to go south for me unless I bug it up immediately to Vref+80 to complete the flap retraction process. I just seems easier to hand fly the a/c until your past the flap retraction process and into a decent climb profile with a good amout of attitude under you.3. Is there anything in writing about the different takeoff techiques employed, and if so, where might I find them?In general, I'd like to know what techniques, wgt's, fuel, and other configurations etc. you personally used or liked and also, what simulator pre-sets did you use or request prior to practicing take-off's. In other words, since I have a limited amount of time [1 hour], can I obtain from the sim operator the fuel loading, gross weight, rwy, and other parameters etc. set-up prior to the take-off so I don't waste my entire hour on taxiing etc. etc.Looking forward to your insight.Regards,Jack
August 24, 200421 yr Personally I have not, but here is my take on your questions as to what I would do.1. What was your Gross Take-off Weight? I would make it light, to make landings realistic.Would you fill the left and right tanks to say 80 percent each with the center dry to give you a gross take-off wgt of approx. 309M LBs. I find that the lighter the aircraft is, it's much harder to manage a decent takeoff profile holding the V2+15, V2+25 requirements before accel.height on the ASI..No, The center tank should have at least .8% fuel in it to avoid vapours to create a potiential explosion. The light aircraft flys as well, but you may want to try and edit the Vnav page in the FMC and change the climb speeds to 270/.78. Have 3000 Kilos in each wing tank..that should last one hour. If not, you get to do a dead stick approach :0)2. Did you hand-fly the a/c to a specific attitude when practicing takeoff's or did you use the N1 method with the autopilot engaged etc.,and if so, when did you activate the autopilot... Use the FD after initial takeoff and hand fly her using Vnav to 5000' then turn to intercept the Magenta and hit Lnav, still hand flying the FD's. Great fun! The rest I can't commment on.In general, I'd like to know what techniques, wgt's, fuel, and other configurations etc. you personally used or liked and also, what simulator pre-sets did you use or request prior to practicing take-off's. Set up on the runway. You are in it to fly not taxi. Remember the Hobbs is running. Take it up and do curcuits. You can always use PIC767 and fiddle with the FMC. Personally, I would just do curcuits at 3000' with winds at 15kts and vis dn to 1/2 mile , and set up for 5 mile finals, better challenge. In one hour you may get 4 landings if your lucky. All the best and good luck
August 24, 200421 yr Bill,Many thanks for your comments. I'll try some of your suggestions. I did know about keeping a minimum amount of fuel in the 'center' and should have left the 'dry' part out of my original post..Regards,jack
