August 20, 200223 yr Hi,Just wondering if there is Spyware hidden / included in Roger Wilco? I read through the pre-install agreement and no mention was made that I found, but I got a bit suspicious when I read something elsewhere recently.I run Roger Wilco Mk.Id3 (Sept 14, 2001).Cheers.
August 20, 200223 yr To make it short: there's plenty! However, you can download a modified installer, that doesn't contain any spyware from the www.vatsim-uk.net Downloads section.
August 20, 200223 yr No, in the current version that you can download from the RogerWilco web site there is none.
August 21, 200223 yr Unless they removed it recently (and I mean in the last month or two) there is spyware aplenty.Gator for one is still included, and a custom thingy from gamespy (who now own Resounding and thus RW). Both will call home with whatever they can find out about your surfing behaveour and who knows what else. The only safe versions are the Mod 1C and earlier, released while it was still Resounding acting on their own. They said they'de remove it, but all that was done was removing the visible installation steps and mention of the stuff in the license agreement.
August 22, 200223 yr Interestingly, I received the following response today from GameSpy tech support ...GameSpy Arcade used Gator about 2 years ago. And NOTHING is ever installed without you clicking "Yes" from us. Roger Wilco is as I said, quite a simply little program. Our sponsors are Casino and Weather Bug (so that we can afford to offer our product to people who choose not to pay) and those most definitely ASK if you would like to try their service. It has been my experience John that people who do not read the prompts when they install a product (and end up hitting yes to everything) call it spyware. If they would actually read during the install, they would perhaps click on "No" ? I don't think there is such a thing as Spyware John, I think it's people who don't pay attention to their installations having to blame someone for what they installed ;-) Hope that helps :) Christine HendersonGameSpy Customer Service-Technical Support
August 22, 200223 yr I'll save my comments about that person's so called official response for myself. Mocking customers is one way to lose business. But that being said... I just installed the latest RW on another system, and although there were a few programs offered during installation, I definitely did have the option to "opt out." And it didn't install Gator on me, so far as I am aware. (That system is out for upgrades at the moment so I can't say for certain that it didn't, but I don't remember AdAware complaining at all.) That being said, I found Mark 1C a bit more stable than the recent versions too.
August 30, 200223 yr I downloaded MkId3 from gamespy on May 22. That version has no spyware in it (I don't remember if you opt out or if it just doesn't put it in). MkId3 is required for proper use of ASRC. I have it, I use it, I check it with Ad-Aware on a regular basis and it NEVER trips my security alarms.
