You do not need to pay for FSUIPC to connect to VATSIM through Squawkbox. But if you are using FS2004 you will need the newer version of FSUIPC http://www.schiratti.com/files/dowson/FSUIPC.zip(currently version 3.078). But, you do not need a paid registration. Squawkbox has a Freeware registration code (LWVQ 7I2V 9GPB) that can be used to give you the FSUIPC functionality required. No, you don't. In fact, I was somewhat lost myself and had trouble getting things to work right until I followed Mike's link and the instructions with another program - SB Relay. Sure enough...things came right back together.
