June 23, 200520 yr I fly for two virtual airlines, but offline. I have been thinking of flying online. However, I was told that a broadband connection is absolutely necessary to fly online. Is this correct? I have looked at the VATSIM and IVAO web sites and cannot find anything about a broadband requirement. I have a dial up 56K modem. However, I have a monster computer with much speed and capacity.Thanks.StannerPS Can anyone suggest a good virtual airline that uses VATSIM?
June 23, 200520 yr Reading the FSINN manual there are tips for optimizing the modem connection, so I'm sure you can. I haven't used the mode option yet. But if you will give it a try and describe your problems, I'll try to duplicate the steps in my environment and assist you. -- L. James-------------L. D. [email protected]/~ljames
June 23, 200520 yr What is SB3? Where can I find it?Can I use voice, i.e., a microphone with SB3 and a 56K dial up modem?Thanks.Stanner
June 24, 200520 yr SB3 is one of the pilot clients that you can find on VATSIM. I don't think you would have any problems with FSINN as I mentioned. I mentioned FSInn because this is what I use, I'll be able to walk you thought the steps easier. Grab FSInn at: http://www.mcdu.com/redirect.php?id=37 If the discussion would have been SB3, I would not have brought up the FSINN alternative. However, since the question was connecting and flying with VATSIM, I bought up what I use seamlessly and would easily be able to be a guide for. Again, give it a try and let me know how it goes. I don't think you'll have any problems. I'm sure you'll have a very enjoyable experience. In conjunction with getting the pilot client, check out some of the VATSIM multi-player procedures at http://www.vatsim.net/prc -- L. James-------------L. D. [email protected]/~ljames
June 25, 200520 yr You can get Squawkbox from http://squawkbox.ca/about/ which also installs and runs very easily. There's no problem using either SB3 or FSInn with a 56k dialup and voice - the amount that is transmitted over the internet conenction is actually quite small.RuthDeputy Director, Vatsim-UK
June 30, 200520 yr How are you doing, Ruth. I wasn't speaking down SB3. Had someone replied to this question and recommended SB3, since I'm sure SB3 would work, I would not have mentioned FSInn, since it would have appeared that he would have had a resolution. I notice that every time there is a reference to FSInn, a number of people try to make sure the user also installs SB3 on his computer. This may not be necessary to fly online. Since it's mentioned almost every time a reference to FSInn, it might confuse a new user to think they won't have enough if they install FSInn. As they get familiar, they will naturally discover SB3. Since you mention that there is not problem with either, I tried to remind the user that he could try my recommendation and advise if he experience problems. By the way, I would have been glad to have heard from the user if he experienced problems, as I would have modified my environment to test my recommendation, which I was sure would work. If he were using SB3 and asked for help with it, before recommending FSInn, I would have installed SB3 to attempt to duplicate his problem, then answered his question, since as you say, they both should work. I'm glad for all the willingness of everyone to jump in and quickly help when someone experience a problem. I don't mean to stifle any of the zealous contributors. However, I will make this type of comment, most of the time, when it appears to be suggested that SB3 needs to be installed to make FSInn work. -- L. James----------------L. D. June 30, 200520 yr I'm with you Larry.BOTH pilot clients will work on 56K - I know of people using them perfectly well on dialup and can be used independently, that is to say you only need to have one of them installed.
