After I hopefully get this Username/password sorted out, what is the best software to download? I have highspeed internet connection and headphones with mic capability. There is a 'squawkbox 3' and something called FSInn. Also, I assume I have to purchase FSUIPC! Is that also correct?Thanks again,John Noullet

You would install install a pilot client. There are two approved for VATSIM, FSInn and SB3. You would install one of those. You don't have to purchase FSUIPC. You really should do the minimum required reading in the PRC. This will answer all the questions you've just asked, plus many questions that you might not think to immediately ask. Get either one. I prefer FSInn because you can close the windows saving some screen space (and not having anything obscure your panel or windscreen as a result).You don't have to purchase FSUIPC but it's highly recommended. Not only is it a highly useful tool but Pete deserves all the support he can get for now almost a decade of providing it to the community, most of that time bearing the quite high cost of development out of his own pocket.
