Using PC power supply for USB hubs

Featured Replies

Hi!I'm building a shell to house my goflight and TRC equipment, and since the TRC equipments needs a standard PC power supply connector, I thought it would be nice if I could use the same supply for my 3 USB hubs. The problem here is that the hubs need 6 volts and the power supply supplies 5 volts. I'm not that much into electronics but I guess this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Is there anyone out there that has a better knowledge of this?

Typically, USB devices require 4.0V - 5.25V (as per specs). However, since you're using external USB HUBs, then there's no telling what's behind the 6V requirement. By using a voltage below 6V you may encounter strange effects with your USB devices. They don't enumerate properly, they stop responding, etc.If you can crack one open, take a look inside and if you see that the power plug is connected to a voltage regulator, you may be able to safely power them directly from your PC power supply depending on which VR they used.Hope this helped.-Leo
