"Quadrature" refers to the 90 degree phase relationship between the two outputs.There are absolute encoders that provide an n-bit output that breaks the encoded field into 2 to the n-th chunks. For example, a five bit absolute rotary encoder divides the 360 degree rotation into 32 chunks of 11.25 degrees each.Each has it's advantages.
