March 7, 200422 yr I am pretty sure he is using laser engraving techniques. The basic approach is to use a plastic background, then coat with a layer of white paint, followed by a layer of the final panel color. The laser is very precise and can 'engrave' down to the white layer through the top layer...leaving a very nice light panel. Alternately, you can use a white plastic panel...but not sure how well the light disperses through it.Laser engraving is done using a CO2 or YAG laser. The YAG is best and cleanest. You can submit a dxf or coreldraw file with specific colors that mark areas to cut and areas to engrave. Cost for laser engraving is approximately $1/minute of laser time. You figure that a standard 12cm x 12cm panel may take 3-6 minutes. Not very expensive. Some places charge setup costs of $10-20/setup. Most do not. Most of the work comes in setting up the files to engrave from. The laser shop will encode a drawing for you, but it will cost you! Here's a good site to browse for more info.http://www.laserimageworks.com/Commercial.asphttp://www.lazerdesigns.com/help/laserengraved.html(even a homebuilt laser http://members.misty.com/don/lasercps.htm)Hope this helps. I plan to do the same with my panels...
