Question: old rudder pedals work with XP or not?

Recommended Posts

Hello all builders,I saw some cheapy Thrustmaster rudder pedals (Rudder Control System) available from auctions. They are all using game port. My question is, will this old pedal work with windows XP system? will they be detected with a generic driver come with XP? It seems like a good unit for converting the real things for sim. Please comment if anyone has related information. Thanks a lot.regards,Alkit

As long as you have a game port correctly configured in windows, you can even directly hook a couple pots to it, and load the generic 2 axis game controller driver, and it will work.

Alkit, Yes they work fine with XP, I recenlty just purchased an RCS set for my sim, you can see a picture in my brag sheets below, They are probably the widest set of pedals I have ever seen available & that is why I chose them, however I did have to reduce the width for them to fit into my pit, They are very easy to pull apart & modify & are of very good construction, I also have a .pdf file explaining how to add toe brakes to them that I found on the net somewhere. If you like I can email the file to you, I have not attempted the toe brake mod yet. Of coarse they are analogue but work fine with XP through a joystick port. If you are going to use them on their own you may have to fool the port into thinking there is a joystick attached with a couple of resistors or possibly use some pots that you could then define in FS to adjust something that you would like to adjust with a pot.Glenn.You can check out my Simpit Project here:http://www.simhardware.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33

Erups, mmmmm I don't know.... you are the first to even mention that, they are just attached .JPG files so they should show, I don't think you have to be a forum member to read the forum, I will check to make sure. Are you getting a red X where the image should be........If so you might scan your system for Spyware, I have seen Explorer affected in this way with some machines that have spyware installed on them.Glenn. Just double checked on a different machine that has never logged into that forum & it all displays OK, & come to think of it I was at my brothers place the other night & I pulled up the forum to show him the pictures, I did not log in & that was on an his Macintosh system & I didn't see any problem at all. You better check your system as suggested.Glenn.You can check out my Simpit Project here:http://www.simhardware.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33

Thank you Glenn and Claudio,I am going to buy the TM's RCS after hearing your comment. This can save me some bucks on buying the CH USD pedal. Also I "FEEL" that the TM's has a better quality and look better (tough).Do I need to buy its joystick as well for make the RCS work? or the RCS can work alone in XP system? Would you tell me which driver shall I choose to enable the pedals?Glenn, is it complicate to add the brake function to it? I am an "idiot" of electronics. :(Best regards,Alkit

Alkit, No you should be able to use the pedals on their own as long as you fool the joystick port in thinking there is a joystick connected to it, It will help you if you do some research on working with joystick ports to understand how they work, they are not a complicated electronic device at all.I will post some links here for you to get you started.http://members.iweb.net.au/~pstorr/pcbook/book2/games.htmhttp://www.epanorama.net/documents/joystick/pc_circuits.htmlhttp://www.mikesflightdeck.com/gameport_1.htmHere is a link showing how to build your own pedals with toe brakes, the circuitry can be applied to the RCS pedals, as the RCS pedals are nothing more that a single 100K pot.http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds/main/howto/rudtoe.htmIf you send me an email via the forum her I will return an email with the toebrake mod .PDF file attached.Glenn.You can check out my Simpit Project here:http://www.simhardware.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33
