Keyboard mapping basics

Featured Replies

Can someone give me the basics of how keyboard assigments work in FS or point me to a tutorial? I am trying to map some PMDG functions to buttons on my PFC flight console and am muddling through. I am curious though, about how these assigments work. I am getting caught up in how MSFS assignes keypresses, and then how PMDG assignes keypresses to enable functions like LNAV and VNAV. For instance, if PMDG uses a keypress number of, say, control + 78 to enable VNAV, my freeware keymapping program says that that 78 is in fact, a combination of shift and the letter n. Yet, I can assign this function to a joystick button by simply using the PMDG modifier (control) and the keypress, NOT shift + control + n. Why I can do this is confusing to me. Am I being clear? My goal is to have a simple keyboard map with the associated key numbers so I can do this routine easilly. Right now I have to go into the MSFS config file, find the associated command with a keypress number, then open MSFS and find out what the letter or number is by searching for that command. I am guessing this must be easier. Thanks for any help.
