How to drive / connect the LCD screen?

Featured Replies

Hello,Anyone know how to operate this kind of LCD screens? It seems not just plug in the VGA port. Not that easy. Anyone have experience or idea baout using them? They are good for inserting into cockpit panel without less concern about the frame size. That's why I am thinking about it.sample:http://cgi.ebay.com/NEC-Gateway-19-LCD-Pan...oQQcmdZViewItemhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ACER-17-LCD-SCREEN-XGA...1QQcmdZViewItemThank youAlkit

Those seem just screen replacements. They do not seem to contain the driver circuit which does all the job for converting the signal from the VGA or DVI connector to the screen transistors. Those are good for replacing broken panels or similar use and will not work without the proper electronics driver.George DorkofikisAthens, Hellas

Almost all laptop computers have the video driver built onto the motherboard, and a proprietary driver sending a direct signal to the screen panel. There's been discussions about using laptop screens on here before, and they've all petered out when no-one could find the hardware to drive them.Richard

Thank you for you guys' reply. Then i will forget about this option and keep finding a suitable LCD monitor.Thank youAlkit

Well...Nothing stops you to buy a cheap 17" or 19" TFT monitor andstrip it from it's case (voiding the warranty of course). Then you will have both the panel and the electronics to drive it.However, the problem then would be where to put the driver board, which I assume will need to be very close to the display.George DorkofikisAthens, Hellas

I don't see a problem there really... Just behind the LCD panel, like most screens do :)

If you don't need such big screen, there are also smaller LCD screen that you can drive through the parallel port.I found (just for experiments for 20 Euro on ebay) a small monochromatic 128x112 graphic LCD screen equipped with T6963C (Toshiba IC with 4 control pins and 8 data lines) that you can drive through the parallel port for my autopilot module (ATR72).There are also other IC that permits to be driven through the parallel port and support bigger resolution. The inconvenient of big screen is that they need, as explained, a driver board that, usually, it's not cheap to buy.Regards,Bob

Yes, that's my current thinking. As I am planning to upgrade "half" of my 747 cockpit to glasscockpit. Putting one big monitor in the COPILOT panel, like those for Honeywell Planeview, Collins' Pro line 21 or think bigger the upcoming 787.Tthe enclosed attahcment picture shows an upgrade for the classic. By the way, any one can get a higher resolution version of this picture??? I scan this tiny picture from magazine long time ago. I do a search in web and find nothing alike relate.www.alkit.nethttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/153490.jpg
