April 9, 200323 yr Effective 21 April 2003, the Virtual United States AirForce is please to announce the further expansion ofour organization with the opening of Air Force SpecialOperations Command (AFSOC).AFSOC is America's specialized air power. It is a stepahead in a changing world, delivering specialoperations combat power anytime, anywhere. The commandis committed to continual improvement to provide AirForce special operations forces for worldwidedeployment and assignment to regional unifiedcommands, conducting the full spectrum of SpecialOperations principal missions and collateralactivities.AFSOC will be commanded by Major General DaveMulligan, VUSAF. General Mulligan has previous commandand operational experience as the commanding officerof the 100th Air Refueling Wing, and United States AirForces in Europe (USAFE) Major Command.The first operational unit in the new command will bethe 16th Special Operations Wing (16SOW), based atHurlburt Field (Florida). 16SOW wing's mission is toorganize, train, and equip Air Force specialoperations forces for global employment. The 16th SOWfocuses on unconventional warfare, includingcounterinsurgency and psychological operations duringoperations other than war. The 16SOW will be commandedconcurrently by General Mulligan until a suitablesuccessor is appointed.Within the 16SOW, will operate initially the 15thSpecial Operations Squadron (15SOS). 15SOS uses theMC-130H Combat Talon II aircraft, supportingunconventional warfare missions and special operationsforces and may be modified to perform clandestinemissions minimizing the chances of being detected byhostile radar systems. This units primary mission isday and night, adverse weather, infiltration,exfiltration, and resupply of special operationsforces in hostile or denied territory. In addition,the squadron is capable of clandestine penetration ofhostile or denied territory to provide aerialrefueling of special operations helicopters.Also operating, initially, under the 16SOW will be the20th Special Operations Squadron (20SOS).
