Matrox Parhelia comments

I've now got this card for my workstation. I thought I'd share a bit my experience with it. Not that there is much yet to tell. The 2D quality is just amazing, even better than my old Matrox G400 card.I'm not really that much into gaming, FS2002 is the only 3D game I play. Unfortunately it doesn't currently work well with the Parhelia. Text is almost unreadable in FAA-16x (16x Fragment AA) and FPS are really slow. Actually the performance at times is worse than with the old G400. This has been reported on the Matrox support forums and will be fixed with new drivers.Other than these minor :-roll issues FS2002 looks great with FAA-16x.I wouldn't recommend this card as a gaming card (Haven't tried surround gaming yet since I 'only' have two monitors). Get the ATI 9700 when they too get FS2002 sorted out :-lol if you only play.EDIT: did a quick screen capture.

Well, at least the screenshot confirms my initial belief that the Parhelia was going to be a bit like a souped-up Voodoo 5500 (and that is a compliment). If you hadn't told me that was a Parhelia, I would have said you used a Voodoo 5500 for that shot. It certainly looks quite good, but the anti-aliasing still seems to reduce image sharpness and clarity across the entire image area (as it did for the Voodoo 5500 and as it still does now with the Geforce 4). The Parhelia was supposed to avoid these problems but the image seems comparable with a Geforce 4 using 4 x AA.Whatever, good fps are very important to me as well which is why I had to give it a miss. I just couldn't buy a card unless the drivers available at the time I buy it work well. When I got my Geforce 4, Nvidia had recently released their 29.42 drivers that work excellently. I held off buying a Geforce 4 until the 29.42 drivers because all previous drivers had one problem or another in my machine on the sims I play. All I can say is good luck with the new drivers. The Parhelia concept took off where 3dfx left off. It seemingly just needs more horsepower. However, if the new drivers magically fix the problem it doesn't say much for Matrox's driver writing ability (or Matrox's management), given how much they had at stake when they released the card onto an extremely competitive market where power counts above all else to many consumers.
