xp pro / ram questions.....

Featured Replies

First: Windows XP does not have the more then 512 meg ram problem...right? Second: Will I see that much of an improvement by going up to a gig of ram from 512? I am using one stick of ddr 2700 on an ABIT kx7-333 mobo with an AMD 2100+ CPU.

Nope, XP doesn't have the 512MB+ bug. Yes, you'll see much of an improvement by going up to a gig of RAM. The more stick you got, the better the performance will be. Hope that helps. :-)Regards,Elmer

Just to add, perfomance increasment will be in loading speed area, not much difference in FPS.Might give you smoother image though because files will load faster.

On the other hand (there is always one of those) I suspect that you won't see much, if any, difference at all. I'm using XP Pro and can run FS2002 all day with 512MB and never hit the swap file. Unless you have some other graphic-intensive programs which require a lot of physical memory I don't think going beyond 512 is very helpful. All mileage is, of course, variable. But check your swap file useage - that'll tell you for sure whether or not the additional RAM will get you some added benefit. I had 768 of PC2700 (333MHz) ram in both my AMD 1800+ and P4 2.26 machines with Windows XP Home and they actually run better with only 512 MB of ram. I kept getting lock ups and reboots. I tested all three sticks (256 Mb ea) they all tested good).Yes I do have a slight increase in load times but for programs other than FS2002, that is not a problem. In fact, my 3D video tests put me at the top of my catagory with only 512 Mb. Only a Radeon 9700 with only 256 MB of ram beat me on that day. That showed me that more is not always better. I look to get the best performace with a "Balanced" system where as all parts work at their max potential together.Terry
