Frame Rate in FS2K2 Pro

Featured Replies

Hi,How do I find out my frame rate in FS2K2 Pro? I'm trying to determine what the difference is between a couple of video cards and would like to be able to see what the actual frame rates are...ThanksMark

Press Shift+z a couple of times. To get more detailed info there put in fs2002.cfg under section:AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1

Mark,As Tim posted Shift+Z will give you a basic frame rate counter. Adding the AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1 to the FS2002.cfg file will give you a slightly more useful counter (low, average, high fps), although it resets itself and is only useful for a short check.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3d90456c46fb78c8.jpgThe AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1 entry besides giving fps values also gives a reading to the right which is interesting. It is measuring a variation, although I'm not sure what values it uses.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3d904589473c09ef.jpgA more useful framerate counter in my opinion is Fraps from www.fraps.com which can also give an average over a longer period of time and can be set up to record values to a text file. I prefer the older fraps 16a version myself.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3d904623485d7c4e.jpgKurt M

Hey guys...thanks for the info. I just got a new card (GeForce4 TI 4200 128MB MSI)thinking it would really boost my framerate. i didn't get the expected results so I wanted to see what the actual frame rates are. The current (old) card is a gforce 2. The frame rate stuff works great. I'll do some testing and see what the real differences are.As I have been trolling around here it looks as if processor is more important than video. I'm currently running on a 1 gig celeron with 500 Meg of ram, so it looks like it might be time to upgrade. Thanks again for the help.Mark

Mark,Your new GF4 should have an advantage over the GF2 at higher resolutions/color depth and fsaa settings. Kurt M

Thanks Kurt,Is there any info that you can point me to that goes into detail about the various video options and what each of them do and how graphics card or processor will effect each?Like what does "locked frame rate" mean? And what effect does it have when you fill in the "Target Framerate" counter in the video options?Mark

I've only got a GF2/64MB and am limited to two fsaa settings (2x or 4x) as an example, the GF4 has several other fsaa settings you can try. In my case I use 1280x960x32 with fsaa at 2x, I do get a slight performance hit with fsaa 2x vs. the same resolution without fsaa. If I go to a higher res. such as 16x12x32 (my monitors limit) at fsaa 2x or use fsaa 4x at 12x9x32 I get a big performance hit. I would expect that the GF4 could handle those settings with little or no performance hit or at least less than the GF2. The GF4 also has some other fsaa settings available that I would be checking out. The target framerate setting will cap your framerates at whatever you set it to, assuming your system can supply those framerates to begin with. When you set the target framerate there is also a setting in the .cfg file that gets set (LOD_TARGET_FPS=xx) were xx is roughly 70% of your target framerate.as a exampletarget framerate/LOD_TARGET_FPS=30/2125/1720/1418/1215/10The LOD_TARGET_FPS=xx is the framerate where some detail is cut back to try and keep the framerate from going below. I find that if my framerates drop to that level that is when I get the biggest fluctuations in framerates and it is less smooth. I try to set the target framerate and the sliders were I can maintain an average at the target framerate and my low framerates are well away from/above the LOD_TARGET_FPS.Try using the AVE_FRAME_RATE_DISPLAY=1 entry in the FS2002.cfg file and checking the V: readout % and see how different target framerate settings affect the variation percent reading as well as low, average, high framerates.I'm not sure if any of this is useful or just makes things confusing, I find it's easier to play with the different settings and see how they actually look quality wise and how they affect the performance than to explain them.Kurt M
