New or old keyboard?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone.I really need a new keyboard for my computer. This one I got free from the place I got my comp from, is falling apart LOL. Just a few minutes ago.........my space bar broke off (im serious LOLOL) and its rather hard to type stuff with a tiny little button for space. I dont even know WHO made this keyboard...it just says "Generic" on the back LOL. I guess thats what I get for using a no name keyboard LOLI have 4 very good AT style keyboards in my basement somewhere, all in good condition, but this comp takes the PS/2 port, not AT. I can usually type a LOT faster on a older "clickety-clack" keyboard than a newer one. Too bad I cant use my ancient IBM 3270PC keyboard, I can type the fastest on that but it has 2 weird connectors (3 pin AT plug and 5 pin serial type plug, not standard sized either, plugged into a 8-bit ISA card).Would it be better to get an AT -> PS/2 adapter or just getting a good quality new keyboard from a store? Thanks

Hey outat...I believe it all boils down to personal preference when it comes to mice and keyboards. I still have an original IBM AT keyboard somewhere in the garage, only because I loved the feedback AND it's a quality piece of hardware. A decade-and-a-half ago, when I worked at a local MicroAge computer store, we would take the keyboards apart for cleaning and/or repair. These were great keyboards IMO, but not everyone felt the same way. Some liked the Compaq keyboards, others swore to Keytronic. In all cases the letters made it to the screen, and that's all that mattered.I've also had a few of the $10 disposable keyboards too. And that's exactly what they were, throw-aways. But at those times in my life, I needed a keyboard right now, and I couldn't afford a Keytronic. Now in the new era of optical mice, wireless keyboards, and ergonomics, the choices aren't quite so simple. But I always recommend in spending some extra $$$ now for equipment that will last for at least 5 years, or the next connector change, whichever comes first! :-lolMy suggestions, stick with Microsoft or Logitech and you wont go wrong. Both offer good product, fair warranties and they update drivers regularly.AAMOF, I just picked up a Logitech Cordless Elite Duo yesterday and have quickly fallen in love. Good feel, standard layout (not a 'split' ergonomic), and has a slew of user definable buttons that really work. And yes, the mouse is optical. I don't have too much real estate on and around my desk. When I would start Flightsim I'd pull my 'wired' keyboard out, away from my keyboard-drawer and place it up on my desktop in front of my monitor. It teetered and slipped, depending on what I had there at the time..not good. Now, with the wireless config, I'm not limited by the wire and I can place the keyboard anywhere I want. I can even place it on my file cabinet drawer next to the desk, and I'll still be able arm my Speed-brakes when needed. I'm really surprised I would like this thing this much. :-sun1So head down to the local computer superstore, and start 'feeling out' the competition and get what feels good to you.Good hunting,
