HiI just bought a 21" CRT HP monitor. However XP only recognises it as 'Default Monitor' hence I can only run it at lower resolutions/refresh rates than the monitor is actually capable of.How do I make XP recognise it properly?Searched high and low across the net without success for drivers, not even the HP website had them. Mmmmm! Thanks :-)

What is the brand of your video card? Also, if you have a Via chipset, you should get the latest drivers from www.viaarena.com. Go to the system information section and see if you have a Via chipset.

Most newer monitors have DDC in them. The video card "talks" to the monitor and finds out what the monitor is capable of. Not sure if a GeForce can do this, but my Radeon 7200 can. Try looking at your advanced video card controls and see if you can hunt this DDC option down, should be in Monitor/Displays tab, at least thats where mine is. If you enable DDC, the video card will set the right values in Windows and you get to use your monitor to full potential.

If you're running XP, the first thing you can do is to check and see if XP has those drivers. Or if you have a CD with the drivers on it, load them onto your harddrive. Just follow the directions on the CD.Otherwise, Right click on Desktop; chose Settings/Advanced/Monitor/Properties/Driver/Update Driver/Choose my own/ you'll want to chose find my own driver. A wizard will pop up. After you've hit next; uncheck that box and a list will pop up. Find your driver on that list. If your monitor is not on that list, just hit cancel. Go to the HP site and see if you can't find an INF exe file to download for that specific monitor. After you've run that exe, your monitor will now appear on that list. If you've done all that and still have no driver for that specific monitor, don't worry about it. The Default Plug and Play will work fine until HP comes up with a specific driver.

Hi guysThanks for your replies!Yes I did download something about inf files but they seemed to be only for win9x as it asked you to put the attached inf file into the windows.inf directory which doesnt exist on XP - where is it? There was no exe file either - just an inf. It said you had to edit the current inf with the contents of the inf they supplied - but I don't know what to modify!?Ta
