Anyone using a GF4 Ti4200 8x AGP card with FS2002?

Featured Replies

Hi,I purchased a Gainward GF4 Ti4200 8x AGP card a couple of weeks ago and I cannot get decent anti-aliasing with this thing while running FS2002 no matter what I try. AA IS working but it's really crappy, jaggy 3D objects and scinillating textures on the ground. I've tried 2x, Quincux, 4x, along with Antiostrophy levels 2 to 8x. FS2002 just looks terrible. The 8x AGP Ti4200 cards will only run 40.xx plus detonater drivers so I can't use the venerable 30.82s anymore. I've tried the 41.09s all the way to the newest beta 43.51s from Guru3D. I've tried using both Rivatuner and the Nvidia control panel to set AA, still nothing is getting me away from these terrible jaggies and shimmering textures. Anyone else going through the same thing with an 8x AGP Ti4200 card with FS2002 and have you found a resolution?I am really close to sending this #$!%^&* card back to where I ordered it, grrrrrr. Thanks for any help or insight you can provide!

Eric, I'm not using the Gainward card but I am using a GF4 Ti 4200 8x (Chaintech, 128MB) and have had the same problem getting FSAA to work properly. I use Rivatuner to set all my video settings (AA, AF, mipmap LOD, GPU/mem clock, etc.) and FSAA didn't always work for me because I play around with Rivatuner so often changing settings that I probably turned off FSAA and didn't realize it. I guess what I'm getting at is you should make sure FSAA is enabled either in your Nvidia display properties, or in a 3rd party tweaker (such as Rivatuner) as well as in MSFS itself. If it is enabled, try disabling it and then re-enabling it to see if that fixes your problem. I seem to remember that fixing my problem the last time around.BTW, you don't have to use 40.xx series drivers with your card, I'm using the 31.00 Det's quite successfully (have compared these to all the other popular Det's and these are the best for my card, bar-none). Perhaps you should give those a shot? Also, if you need to get Rivatuner, head on over to www.guru3d.com in the downloads section and d/l the latest version. It's an excellent tweaking program that allows you to change most any graphics setting you can think of.hope this helps,Max Cowgill

Hi Max,Thank you for your reply, I certainly didn't realize that any of the 30.xx drivers would work with an 8x AGP Ti4200. The 30.82s definitely won't install but I will give the 30.00s a shot, thanks for the advice.Max, can you please tell me your Rivatuner settings for FS2002? How is the ground texture quality? Do you get texture shimmering at all? Thank you again, this is really helping me out a lot.

Just downloaded the 3011s from Guru3D, they won't install on the Gainward either. The only Detonater driver sets that will run all my 3D games stabily across the board are the 43.xx and higher. FS2002 looks like crap no matter what.Mr. Gainward is getting this card back :( I've had enough of this crap, ATI is getting my next purchase. Nvidia is quickly falling by the wayside now in my opinion, I think they are headed the same route as the doomed 3Dfx eventually. They are turning out crap and can't keep up with the continuous assault from the new ATI Radeons kicking their behinds. No more shimmering textures, no more screwed up AA, no more Nvidia, PERIOD.Thanks again for you help though.

Eric, you misread my post. I said 31.00 series, not 30.xx. It must be 31.00 or higher (30.82's didn't work for me either). My image quality using these drivers and my Rivatuner settings is fantastic. Not as great as running a Radeon w/6x AA and 16 AF, but still pretty darn nice. I have to go to work now so I can't give you my Rivatuner settings ATM, but I'll post them here when I get back home later tonight.regards,Max Cowgill

I mistyped in my reply, I did in fact try the 3100 drivers, they simply will not work with the Gainward Ti4200, nothing below 40.xx will. I think there is something wrong with the Gainward Ti4200 cards, they are defective in my opinion. This card is going back today, already yanked it out of my machine. A GF2 MX400 can deliver the same performance in FS2002 with AA turned off completely and the visual quality is about the same as the GF4 with Quincux and 4x AS, go figure. I am an official Nivdia hater, I'm so tired of putting up with their constant driver/compatibility fiascos. ATI, here I come! Thanks again.

Ouch, sounds like you got a bad card indeed... Better luck with whatever card you do end up with! Might I recommend a Radeon 9500 Pro (or higher)? I think you'd very much enjoy the performance and image quality you'd get with one of these cards.regards,Max Cowgill

Eric,Are you running the latest chipset drivers for your motherboards chipset? (eg Via 4in1's Intel etc) If your not I would upgrade those first. Than I would try running the latest set of drivers from Nvidia. If your not happy with that take a stroll over to www.omegacorner.com and dl and install his series of Nvidia drivers. Should help. A bad card would be my last check.Bobby
