April 30, 200323 yr Hi! As someone else in an other thread, I too, over the weekend, have made a fresh install of Win XP on my puter along with a new 40 Gg hd and a memory upping to 768 meg. I also went for the Omega driver. I'm quite please with the results for FS usage though I have a little qwirk with the system that is not FS related.Normaly, I would start the machine in the morning and let it run all day till I go to bed, where I shut it off. I use this machine for many other purposes than FS. Yes, yes! It's possible ;-)Many times a day I come to the machine do some work.... like checking what's new at Avsim...ahem! and then leave until next time around. When I leave I prefer to put the system on sleep mode. Well, that is untill now. Because, now, if I try this, the system goes on sleep ok but will lock on wakeup. Any idea of a cause or a cure? Didn't have any problem with Win98 2nd ed. Other than that, everything works fine as far as I can say.System: Win XP Pro, AMD Athlon 1.33 on Abit KT7A, 768 Meg PC133, Maxtor 40GB + IBM 13GB, Forsa GeF2MX 200 (32Meg) (to be upgraded in a couple of months)Thanks for any helpHugo
April 30, 200323 yr Hugo, Read upbelow and see if this helps:SYMPTOMSIf your Windows 2000-based or Windows XP-based computer with multiple ATA drives enters the S1 power state, you may experience one of the following symptoms: Windows does not recognize the ATA drives when you resume your computer from sleep or standby. You may receive the following error message: Unsafe Removal of Device: You have unplugged or ejected a device without stopping it. Unplugging or ejecting devices without first stopping them can frequently cause your computer to crash and loose valuable data.Windows may stop responding (hang).CAUSEThis problem occurs partly because the IDE storage driver stack incorrectly accesses registers that are required for a software reset. This leaves the host controller or device in a hung state. This problem does not affect computers that are using ATA Host controllers that are configured for Legacy mode operation. Although this issue has been identified on the Intel ICH5-based chip set, it is not limited to this hardware. RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;EN-US;CNTACTMSNOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question. The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.Files for Windows 2000 Date Time Version Size File name ------------------------------------------------------ 25-FEB-2003 10:30 5.0.2195.6672 86,704 Atapi.sys 25-FEB-2003 10:31 5.0.2195.6672 22,064 Pciidex.sys 12-FEB-2003 15:43 5.3.16.3 6,656 Spmsg.dllFiles for Windows XP Date Time Version Size File name ------------------------------------------------------ 31-JAN-2003 15:43 5.1.2600.1164 87,040 Atapi.sys 31-JAN-2003 15:43 5.1.2600.1164 23,680 Pciidex.sys 14-NOV-2002 10:01 5.3.10.0 4,608 Spmsg.dllMORE INFORMATIONWindows ATA and ATAPI drivers may experience these symptoms, and any driver controller chip set that runs in native IDE mode may also be affected.Native mode ATA controllers are not common, and are generally used only on newer systems with multiple ATA controllers. For example, these might be used with a combination of Parallel ATA and Serial ATA (SATA) controllers. To determine if your computer is running in ATA Native mode: Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. On the View menu, click Resources by Type.Expand Interrupt Request (IRQ). If Device Manager shows that IRQ 14 is assigned to the primary IDE channel and it shows that IRQ 15 is assigned to the secondary IDE channel, your computer is in Compatibility mode. If only one of these IRQs (14, 15) is assigned to an IDE channel and both channels are enabled in your computer BIOS, your computer is in Native mode. Many computers that are equipped with Native mode ATA controllers also have a setting in the BIOS to enable or disable Native mode. Also, What Bios revision are you running?.
