On-Board Sound MotherBoards.

Featured Replies

Hi All,I'm up-grading in a few weeks time to a better system and just wandered about on board sound, I'm running a Abit KR7-A Raid at the moment and as old as it is it's been a great board but is dated now and won't take a big processor so it's going to have to go, when I got this board there were a lot of boards out with OB Sound but it was a general rule that they weren't very good, but I've heard that now it's all been vastly improved upon,I was thinking of up-grading to the following specs,ASUS Enforce2 MB A7N8X Rev1.06.AMD Barton 3000+Seagate Baracuda 120 GiG Serial ATA HDD.1024MB Corsair Extreme Low Latency CAS 2 RAM.Vantec Stealth 520Q PSU.NEW Herculese 9800Pro Graphics card 128MB.GF2 MMX 64MB Card.(I'm keeping this one for now as it's been a pretty good secondary card)4X Vantec Stealth Fans 120mm.Vantec Stealth CPU Cooler.Vantec Nexus Rehobus controller.Vantec Nexus Multipanel for keeping an eye on the temps and speeds etc and has another 2 USB / Firewire ports built into it.I use 2 monitors and have been doing for quite some time now and find it particularly usefull for FS, I use a 22" HP monitor in front of me for FSim and a 21" Dell just to the left of that for FS Nav, saves constantly switching screens and they are getting very cheap now as everyone seems to want the waifer thin panels,so it'a a buyers market for us now. plus it's very usefull for installing things as well, you can have the readme onen on the left monitor while watching / installing on the main monitor, and it's good for web browsing too as any other windows that come with a site go to the left monitor.I just wondered if any of you have any views on this.thanks,Steve

I love my Nforce 2 sound I took out my Audigy and am running the Nforce 2 exclusively. It's pretty CPU efficient too! Nice rig you have planned there!

Couple of things:1) IIRC, ppl have had a ton of trouble having an NVidia card installed with an ATI card. So if you plan to have both cards(9800 and your NV card) odds are you will have problems.2) On board sound has improved, but it still sucks! I have had a CMEdia onboard sound for the longest time on my Shuttle AK35GT2, and I thought it sounded alright. Then I 'upgraded' to the much older Soundblaster LIVE! Value(it was in an old computer I had laying around) and WOW, it made all the difference in the world. I never bothered to hook up my 4.1 surround sound speakers because with my CMedia(I could have) because the sound was so so, and it didn't matter if I was 'surround sound' or not. But with my LIVE! I am finally on surround sound, and I don't regret my choice........My advice, get yourself an Audigy 2 for less than 100 dollars.Other than that, nice system, I envy you. :D

Well, thanks to both of you for the replies, I suppose I will just have to wait and see what happenes, worst case is I will have to buy a sound card, but then again there not that much now, I'm just a little worried though about the display card side, I want all the power for the 9800Pro, and I don't want to use it for both monitors(dual View) because I don't want to slow it down,I suppose I'll just have to ask the suppliers what they recommend.Steve,
