Geforce FX 5900 256 MB is this the Future?

Featured Replies

Today, NVIDIA is once again proving that it is a company that can learn from its mistakes. A mere three months after the troubled launch of the FX 5800 Ultra, we are seeing the introduction of a successor that addresses and fixes all of the weaknesses of the original part. The memory bus has been widened to 256 bits and the GPU has been treated to a number of refinements. Although NV35 runs 50 MHz slower than its older sibling, this is virtually unnoticeable. The fact is that the enormous bandwidth of the improved 256-bit memory interface can easily pick up the slack and then some. Now, the FX 5900 is able to outpace the Radeon 9800 PRO in all relevant benchmarks and can reclaim the performance throne for NVIDIA. The card offers unrivaled FSAA speed combined with very good anisotropic filtering image quality and performance, thanks to the new Detonator FX driver, giving it a comfortable lead over its rival. Only the quality of its ordered-grid FSAA implementation remains inferior to that of ATi's card, a disadvantage it can more than make up for in sheer speed.Quote : Toms Hardware (12.05.03)If this is so, is this a better Video card than the Radeon Equivilent for FS2K2?, assuming you have a fast CPU like the P4 3GHZ machine? Many thanks, Best Wishes,ChrisEGBB

i would still take a 9800 Pro, any day for visual quality, and just because nvidia doesnt seem to be the most reassuring company right now...considering they cheated on 3Dmark03

Chris,Sounds good...But have they run it up against the 9800Pro w 256 Megs of Memory?. Don't get me wrong, sounds good from a number stand point but don't we all pay for image quality along w speed?. Don't get me wrong, all this bodes well for us the consumer as it causes price drops and improved products. But lets face facts, Image quality still belongs to ATI. Speed is not always everything. :)Now....Wheres that 9900 From ATI }( Bobby

I don't know where the 9900 from ATI is right now. But, I did read that the 5900 from Nvidia has been delayed. Where have I heard that before. The good news is that when it does arrive, those that just have to have an Nvidia will finally have what appears to be a good card.

9900- ive heard rumors that it wil have the R400 core...0.13 micron, DDR-II most likely. should be here in july or august. thats just rumor though.

Hi all,Many thanks everyone for your kind replies which are much appreciated.Best wishes,ChrisEGBB

Thanks Bobby.I must admit when I compare the specs between the Ti 4600 and the 5900 FX, I am confused further : 4600 5900Memory Bandwith: 10.4GB/Sec 27.2GB/SecFill Rate: 4.8 Billion!! 3.6 Billion??????? Vertices Per Second: 138 Million 338 MillionAlso they don't tell us what the operations per second are on the FX 5900.I wonder if we are being dupped agin?Best Wishes,ChrisEGBB
