July 7, 200322 yr Hi there :-)I am going to be getting a new FX card soon. At the minute I am using a Geforce 3 64mb card. I'm really not sure what card to get so im asking you guys to help me out, please? ( thanks ;-) )I was thinking about the 128MB Radeon 9100 but from the site im (may) order it from (crucial),it says that i require an AGP 2X or AGP 2X/4X universal slot. Im really not sure if i have an AGP slot but i know for a fact that my Geforce 3 in at the minute is in a PCI slot. My computer is a Dell Dimenson 4100, 933mhz, 512ram, 30gb h/d. I have know idea about the mobo so im not sure if it has an AGP slot available...If possible, does anyone know where i could order a Radeon 9100 (128mB) that comes in a PCI slot fitting? Or better yet, do you know of any other similiar cards that come with a standard PCI slot fitting? It has to be at least 128mb and I can't go for anything that needs a 200+ power supply ( or maybe its 250 W... I forget...)Thanks for your help :-wave
July 7, 200322 yr ERGH.I'd get a whole new system if I were you.Anyways, DO NOT get anything lower then a Ti4200.Look at the 9500 PRO/9700 NON PRO.They require a bit of computer knowledge to install, and you need a 300 watt-350 watt psu. Now, if you have an agp slot.. take off your case and look, if there is a brown slot above the pci slot, and it has 3 holes, it's agp I think :)
July 7, 200322 yr Thanks for reply guys :-badteethOk, I've found the AGP slot so that's good...Bobby, what you said about the CPU upgrade made me think (???). How difficult is it to upgrade the CPU to something 2 ghz +. Would i need to get a new motherboard for that sort of thing ?I noticed a HUGE difference when i changed from 128mb Ram to 512. 512 is the maximum for my machine :-boomPlease Bobby, im putting all my faith in you.. is the Radeon 9500 pro ok for my machine (and its current power supply ? ) I have a lot of peripherals that are USB (5) and then just the CD-drive really. No floppy drive, my 3 y/o nephew filled it with loose change one day :-fume.Thanks again for the Info guys!, Very much appreciated!! :-beerchug
July 7, 200322 yr The best upgrade for the CPU you could get would be the Powerleap adapter. It will take you up to 1.4Ghz Celeron and is easy to install. If you wanted to go any higher you'd have to get a new PC.www.powerleap.com and find PL-iP3/T or go to http://plpadmin.tempdomainname.com/PLiP3T.html"The PL-iP3/T is an innovative upgrade adapter that enables Slot 1 systems (including those based on Intel Celeron, Pentium II, and Pentium III CPUs) to use the newer "Tualatin" Celeron and Pentium III CPUs. With the PL-iP3/T, you can obtain significantly faster performance (up to 1.4GHz) from your Slot 1 system--without replacing the motherboard."
July 7, 200322 yr Thank you so much, Eric. I just placed an order for the PL-370/T 1400P-S upgrade. My CPU will now be 1.4 GHz :D *YAY*!!Does this cause any problems with the Radeon 9500 pro graphics card and the power supply ?Thanks again for all the info!!!
July 7, 200322 yr EGT,Due to the proprietary nature of Dell your looking at a rather involved upgrade. Although you could go with an Intel MicroATX 845 based board and a P4 at around 2.4 Ghz. Unfortunately a new power supply would seriously be reccomended. My advice. Stay away from the slocket adapters and such. For the money you spend there will be Little performance improvement seen.Go with the 9500. You won't be sorry. Like I said your power supply AT THIS POINT....Will do fine.Save some cash and when your ready, an Intel 845 MB, 2.4 Ghz P4 and 512 Megs of PC2700 DDR should run you less than $400. The performance difference you will see will be amazing.Any questions drop me a PM and I'll answer any questions you have and suggestions for a pretty sweet upgrade.Bobby
July 7, 200322 yr Thanks for the Advice Bobby. I cancelled the adapter order and placed an order for the Radeon 9500 pro.I'll be in touch about my future upgarde (soon :D)
July 7, 200322 yr A 1.4 ghz Celeron? No way dude.I'd go for at least a 2 ghz P4.But, if you got a new mobo for AMD, get a 2500+, they have 512 kb of L2 cache and 333 fsb but 1.8 ghz, but it's still faster then a 2.0 ghz 2400+ that has 266 fsb and 256 L2 cache :)And yes, get a 400watt or 350 watt PSU, for future upgrades :)
July 7, 200322 yr EGT,Glad I could help. And no offense to Delta 747. I just can't see $320 for a 500 Mhz upgrade. Your still stuck w a 133 Mhz FSB and memory. You made a good call w the card choice. Trust me you will not be dissapointed.Just in case your interested....This would run you about $450Motherboard:Intel Pentium 4 (800 FSB) Micro ATX Motherboard Model BOXD865GLC - RETAIL Specifications: CPU:Supports Intel Pentium 4 processor with a 400/533/800MHz (mPGA478-pin)Supports Hyper-threading Chipset: Intel 865G IDE:2x IDE RAM: Double Data Rate DDR400 support Slots:1x AGP 8X, and 3x PCI Ports:2xPS2, 4x USB (see pics) Onboard SATA:2 Onboard Video: Intergrated Video Onboard Audio: Intergrated 6 Channel Audio Form Factor: MicroATX more info>CPU:Intel Pentium 4 / 2.4CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL Specifications: CPU: 2.4GHz Type: Pentium 4 Northwood Cache: 512K BUS: 800 Mhz Socket: 478 Retail box (with Heatsink and Fan) Memory:CORSAIR MEMORY XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 256MB 32MX8 PC-3200C2 With Heat Spreader OEM Specifications: Speed 400MHz Organization 64M x 64 CAS Latency 2-3-3-6-T1 Memory type DDR Power Supply:Antec 330W Power Supply TRUE330 ATX Form Factor, ATX12V compliant for Pentium 4 (backward compatible with previous Pentium versions) and AMD systems +5V Stand-By & Logic On/Off Antec Low Noise Technology Maximum Power 330W This would surely drop your jaw with it's Speed, stability and cost factor.Bobby
July 7, 200322 yr >Glad I could help. And no offense to Delta 747. I just can't see $320 for a 500 Mhz upgrade. Your still stuck w a 133 Mhz FSB and memory.Exactly why I didn't get that and got a new 8250. I only suggested it because EGT sounded like he didn't want to get a new box.If you go with that setup you will need a new case. Putting new PSUs and mobos unless their the same as the old are very hard to do with Dells. That's a nice system you have set up. If I were getting one I'd bump up to 512MB.
July 8, 200322 yr Delta,That's what I figured that's why I hoped I didn't offend you. :)By the way the price for the system above includes 512 Megs. I forgot to mention that. It's 2 sticks of 256. He may not need a new case. I just did an older Dell for a customer and everything fit nicely. Only had to switch pins on the Power switch and reset button to match up w the new board. :)Glad ya like it. For $450, how could you go wrong.Have a good one guys..Bobby
July 8, 200322 yr You are right about the case somewhat. I've heard some models have different screws for the motherboard and they don't line up. People have moded it so it fits though but you have to have some good power tools and know how to work with that stuff well. How much is that power supply? I found this case at NewEgg.com that has the same 330W PS: http://secure.newegg.com/app/specification...item=11-129-116 . It's $98.00.
July 8, 200322 yr D,I think it was around $51.00 for the PS. If he did need a new case for $98 bucks for both case and PS you can't go wrong. :)Bobby
