July 8, 200322 yr By the end of the summer I am going to be upgrading my computer (m/b, RAM and processor) and I had a dual monitor question. I am going to be buying a Asus A7N8X board, 2 sticks of 256MB PC3200 DDR RAM, and an Athlon XP 2700+ or 2800+.The question is related to the video card setup though. I like to run dual monitor and I currently have 2 GeForce 2 cards (one AGP and one PCI) doing that for me. I am planning on carrying over my GeForce 2 PCI card (if it will work) to the new m/b. I would like to get a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Ultra. Can I run a Geforce 2 in a PCI slot with Detenator drivers along side a Radeon 9600 card in the AGP with out having stability issues? I really have no experience with the ATI cards, and I am not too familar with their drivers, but I like what I read about them over at Tom's Hardware and other hardware review sites. If this would not work and I need to stick with the Nividia cards, I would get one of the mid-level GeForce FX cards (one with at least 128 MB of RAM).Thanks!-Christopher (C.J.) Starr
July 9, 200322 yr Hi Christopher,I asked the same question a while ago and didn't get any replies to it either,I want to run a GF2 on the Asus board the same as you with a 9800pro, I even called a tech suport guy at Herculese and he said he coulden't see any problems, he told me to try it and see, (not much use when you have allready bought everything I thought)but, thats exactly what I'm going to do anyway, hope this helps a little,Steve.
July 9, 200322 yr ATI is set up to run two monitors with the one card. Just can't run 3d on both monitors from what I've been lead to believe. Once you install the ATI drivers, you'll find two devices listed in the device manager. Primary and Secondary. You can use hydravision or whatever it's called to set them up. I don't run two monitors so there's probably someone else here that can help more than me. As to running an ATI card with an Nvidia PCI card, probably not a good idea.
July 9, 200322 yr Thanks for the replies guys. One thing that I am concerned about with the Radeon 9600 Pro Ultra is that it has one standard VGA output and one of those digital DVI outputs that digital LCD screens use. It would make since to me that if you ran both monitors off the same card only one would be able to do 3D. I will have to look into the digital output issue and see if there is some way to convert it to VGA. Take care guys and thanks again!-CJ
July 9, 200322 yr Well,After doing a little research I have found out a little more information about those DVI outputs. There are two kinds: analog and digital. The one that the Radeon 9600 Pro Ultra uses is analog, which is good news. All you need to convert an analog DVI output to VGA is a little $5 converter attachment. So it looks like I will only have to run 1 video card. Now, if you are trying to convert DVI digital to VGA analog it gets a little more exciting and expensive. Doing a quick google search the cheapest DVI digital to VGA adaptor was $400! I'm really glad that ATI chose the less expensive route :0).Take care,-CJ
