Changing Stock CPU Fan

Featured Replies

A quick question for all you tech heads, from a complete novice. I have an off the shelf P4 3.0Ghz system. The CPU fan (Intel) is amazingly noisy, It sounds like a 747 on takeoff. I was wondering if it is possible to change the fan, not the heatsink unit just the fan, and make it quiter. If this can be done can anybody recommend a make of suitable fan. Please remember don't get to technical on me. I'm a complete novice and I'll cry. Many Thanks

I am not 100% sure, but I think you can.I know that you can get seperate fans and heatsinks, but it all depends on your specific one, whether you can change fans.Is your fan integrated to the HS, or does it look look like it could come off?Keep in mind that if you change your fan, you have to get one that shifts at least the same amount of air as your current one, otherwise your cpu might overheat. A couple of questions:1) How computer savvy are you?2) What is your total budget for this?regards,Bob.

If you are using the stock intel cooler than no you cannot change the fan as it is integrated into the clip that secures the HS in place. I'm wondering what you mean by really noisy. I currently am running the exact same CPU in my wifes machine and she loves the fact you can hardly hear it.Only alternative is an aftermarket Fan/HS combo. Zalman markets some nice quiet units although technically it may void your CPU warranty. I know lots of people do it. Just read your CPU manual in the warranty agreement. Unless of course you don't care.My advice....Leave it alone. It's probably one of the quietest, most efficient P4 coolers around.Bobby

Mmmmm, I didn't know that they supposed to be quiet. Are you sure he noise isn' coming from one of your case fans, or perhpas the fan on your grapgics card?regards,Bob.
