Yet another ATI Question

Featured Replies

OK, I've run out and bought a new system for FS2004. Here are the rough specs:Windows XP ProP4, 3.0 GHz, 833 FSB, H/T1 GB DDR PC3200 Kingston RAM80 GB Western Digital HD and a slaved 40 GB Western Digital (both 7200 rpm)Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer sound cardANDATI 9800 Pro 256 MB video card.OK, I'm starting to read on the various forums that the ATI has more stutter problems than the GeForce, and I have the TI4400 card in my current machine. I bought the 9800 because the consensus was that it was a slightly better (faster) card, and this too is what is being said on the various FS forums, but it suffers more from stutters than the TI cards. So, my question to any folks here who currently have and are running FS2004, is just how bad are the stutters, and should I be thinking of swapping my video cards? My main aim was to prevent as much of the stuttering and pausing as possible (I DO hope this version of FS isn't going to be another FS2000!!! :-roll) and maintain as much fluidity as possible. It almost *sounds* like I've done just the opposite.I've read as many of the forum posts here as possible regarding the video cards, so I guess I'd like to hear from someone who actually now is running the sim on either one of these cards. Many thanks for the help!Glenn

Lol you just ran out and bought it...just....just ran out and bought it. sounds funny when you got something with 3 Ghz and 1 Gb ram with ATI 9800 pro! lol(is jelious)

Bad choice of words I guess :-). I've been saving for this system since FS2002 came out actually. However, I'm about to pick it up tomorrow and am really worried now after reading several forums about major league stutters with the Radeon. Even Katy Paluta (sp?) says one Radeon she tried gave higher fps' than the TI, but the stutters were so bad in ACoF that she couldn't fly it. The words, "uh ohhh" are starting to filter through my mind.Glenn

If your getting stutters your CPU/memory is the weak link usually w this card. The 9800 Has an amazing ability to push Frames. Actually more than 75% more than a 46-4800 w AA and AF turned on.>So, my question to any folks here who currently have and>are running FS2004, is just how bad are the stutters, and>should I be thinking of swapping my video cards? Thanks Bobby, and yes, it was a typo in the FSB section. I meant 800 :-).That sounds good, but what I've read seemed to be 2004 specific. However, I've been able to determine that some of the stuttering appears to be related to the weather updates (which I also get in 2002 using 3rd party wx programs) thus not really related to the video card per se. I suppose part of what I'm reading is simply "new sim stuff" where some of the bugs and tweaking has yet to be worked out. At least, that's what I'm hoping :-).Thanks again Bobby,Glenn

FPS,I just got the ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256 mb. I also just got FS2004. The graphics are absolutely spectacular!! However, there are two MAJORLY ANOYNING BUG with Catalyst 3.6 drivers. 1) When ever you press the alt button to access menues there are about 6 on/off screen flashes EVERY time which is increadily anoying and gives headaches. This was confirmed by Chris Willis, he said it might cause seizures which is NO joke. 2) When accessing emmbeded windows such as kneeboard with text scrolls within the text is increadily streched and unreadable which is quite anyoying for the nav log on the kneeboard. On the upside the graphics especially with full AA and AF which will bring even your 3.06 to a crawl!! but I've been able to do some quick teeking and can get 20fps with real life image quality especially at DUSK!!! Clouds are spectacular!BillyBob

BillyBob; I would think that 4xAA & 16xAF (performance) would be all you would ever need. Try running Performance Anisio instead of Quality. I actually prefer it as the texture blending is much better running performance and you also get a nice bump in the fps department.

Thank you BigShot
