RAM Upgrade for FS2004 - worth it?

Featured Replies

I've noticed some pretty bad stutters in FS2004 when running at 1600x1200. I currently have 512MB of RAM.Would additional RAM help this, or am I simply running up against the wall of my video card's capabilities (Radeon 9500 Pro).

Mack,The stutters your experiencing are due more to the resolution your pushing than the ram you have. Also, FS2004 is extremely CPU dependant. You didn't say what your running but anything under 2Ghz will show a strain at those resolutions. Are you also running AA and/or AF at those Res. If so, your reaching the limit of the card. One option is to head over to WWW.Rage3D.com and look up the 95 to 9700 softmod. It works with most 9500's when done right and opens up the 4 additional memory pipelines. You could also try slightly overclocking the card and/or CPU. You could also try lowering the resolutions along w a slider adjustment or two. What type of memory are you running? That can also make a tremendous difference in the performance of the sim.If you want, post your exact system specs and I can give you a much more focused answer.Bobby

>What type of memory are you running? That can also make a>tremendous difference in the performance of the sim.I've tried setting various display options and reducing the detail levels to well below what worked with FS2002, but I still get stutters every time in the following situation:- Set up a flight starting at KTIW (Tacoma Narrows) in fair weather- Fly Northeast to KSEA (Sea-tac) and approach for landing on runway 34L or 34RAs the flight proceeds, I start to notice stutters, and they get really bad on final approach. Little things like triggering the flaps or having an ATC message pop-up will also cause a stutter.Looking at my task manager, FS2004 (currently minimized) has a peak mem usage of 408,200k, 482,784 page faults, and a VM size of 630,192 k. My system is a P4 2.4 with 512MB of PC800 non-ecc RDRAM, and a Radeon 9500 Pro. My drive is de-fragged before and after FS2004 installation.
