Since you don't have much money right now I suggest you go with AMD. AMD gives more performance for the money at the low end. Also you I suggest you get an NForce 2 Ultra 400 motherboard and 2 identical sticks of PC3200 memory. If you want to go for something in the 1.8-2.2GHz range then you're better off with AMD because clock for clock the AMD is much faster than Intel. Try to get the Athlon with the 512K L2 cache and 400MHz FSB but that depends on your budget.

AMD is cheaper, I'd also look at upgrading your video card for better performance. A low cost card is the Nvidia 5200 128MB. For hard drives look into a model with 8MB cache for better performance.
