September 6, 200322 yr I am having a WEIRD driver issue right now. This is kinda long, but I tried to be as detailed as I could.I installed XP yesterday and everything been running extremely smooth till now (going from a 40GB 5400rpm HD to a 80GB 7200rpm HD has a big impact LOL). I just got the new ATI Catalyst 3.7 drivers for my Radeon 7200. I install them like I normally do and reboot, works perfect as far as I can tell. I had to go somewhere so I shut my computer off for a few hours. When I booted the comp afterwards, XP fails to boot (It gets the splash screen, but the progress bar stops completely, no errors). Since I knew I installed the Cat drivers last, I boot into safe mode (safe mode works) and remove them and reboot. What do you know, XP boots perfect with its stock Radeon 7200 drivers.I reinstall the Cat drivers again, works perfect after the reboot. To be on the safe side I reboot about 5 more times and it still works flawlessly. I decide to shut the comp off for a few minutes and turn it back on. Whoa, ok XP dont boot again. Now this is getting interesting, I never had anything like this before LOL. I never had a driver work after rebooting but stop working after you cut the power. I download the older Cat 3.2 drivers (Seems to be the best for the 7200, and I KNOW those worked before) and install to see if the new Cat drivers are messed up. SAME problem. XP wont boot up after you power down. WEIRD.I usually wouldn't have any problems running on the stock XP drivers, but FS2004 is basically unplayable on the stock ones, too many graphic glitches (the 3.7's and 3.2's worked great while they worked). I even tried manually installing the drivers (not just running the EXE), no go, turn comp off and drivers still dont work. Could someone help me out here LOL? I dont really want to keep my comp running all the time just to keep the display drivers running (I got a very very noisy computer) LOL.Specs are in the signature, just ask if you need more. Thanks a lot,
September 7, 200322 yr Just a couple of suggestions:- use Windows Update to ensure you have all critical and just the recommendeds that you want, but all the critical ones.- then, test again. If you still have the problem (probably you will), then remove all ATI items (driver and control panel) through add/remove-programs in Control Panels. XP will probably load the standard VGA drivers but that's what you want. If you have to force the standard VGA drivers (XP's standard, not Catalyst), then reboot several times to make sure all is ok. Try the 10-15min. off test to make sure you're ok.- Ok, now, do a couple of system maint. items. Just for grins, de-frag your new drive. Then, check your startup folder to make sure there's nothing weird. Then, do a start/run/msconfig.exe and look at the startup tab. If anything looks weird to you, un-check it. Go to the Services tab and un-check two ATI items that might be there. One of them is ATIHotKey but they both start with ATI.- Reboot again. You'll get a dialog box when she comes back up saying you modified the system config. Check the dont-show-me-this-again box and click OK. - Now try the 3.7 driver .exe again (or whichever release you want; 3.7 should work). Do this through the ati s/w, not manually.- Reboot once when asked. Then install the control panels .exe. Reboot again only if asked.- Now go through the advanced driver settings through desktop properties. Check over everything; all options to make sure they're what you want.- Reboot once. If you're successful, go on and do your power-off rest thing and try again. If successful, congrats! If not, cry and re-post.Good luck,sj
