November 4, 200322 yr Dear all,Sorry for a lengthy post, and please forgive my English.I have a new system that so that I can run FS2004 with all its glory. As boradband connection is not yet available in part of my country, I used a USB 56k modem. However, my computer often hang when I connet to internet. Sometimes I can surfe smoothly, but most of the time the PC freezed after several minutes when I surfed the web.Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del seemed not working, and I have to press the power button or the reset button to restar my PC. Interestingly, the system never failed even if I used it for other applications. One of my friend had suggested to try to connect the modem into another USB port available in my PC. This solved the problem! I can connect to the net without any trouble. But for some reason I need to move my PC and had to remove all the cables (power, monitor, speaker, joystick, mouse, and the modem). When I reconnected all the cables and turned on the PC, it informed me that a new USB modem was found, and asked me to install the driver, to which I did as instructed. However, the old problem reappeared. I tried different USB ports (and installing the driver every time I did that) but this time, the problem did not go away.Suspecting that the modem was the culprit, I bought another USB modem. After installing the modem properly, I was surprised that the problem is still there. Can anybody helped me solve this? Is it an IRQ conflict? If so, how can I "un-conflict" it? Regards, japangg
November 4, 200322 yr What O/S are you using? My guess would be this is not an IRQ issue as all new PCs use ACPI so you could not change the IRQ even if you wanted to.Possibly your best bet is to remove all instances of the USB modem. Reboot in safe mode and check device manager and see how many usb modems are listed. Then remove all of them and start over by reloading the drivers.
November 4, 200322 yr Hi, thanks for the advice. I use WinXP and Service Pack 1. I someow found a set of newer drivers onthe manufacturer's site, and tried them. My modem seems to workfine now. The funny thing is, the date of the drivers I got from the site is the same with the date of drivers provided inthe installation cd.Oh well, at least I got that modem work properly now.
