Upgraded CPU Athlon 2100+ -> 3000+ very happy!

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,Well, as far as functional upgrades to my machine are concerned, I'm finished woohoo :-).When my parcel arrived this afternoon. It contained the AMD Athlon XP3000+ and the Thermaltake Volcano 12 CPU cooler.I set straight to work. Upgrading the CPU wasn't as easy as all that. The main trouble was the CPU cooler. The rear clip needed perfect alignment and even then needed a pencil tipped eraser to push it in (couldn't use my fingers in the tight space). Once the cooler was properly clipped on, I wasn't sorted yet. I had to get the motherboard tray in - trouble here was the PSU got in the way of the rather tall and fat cooler. Some 3d thinking and I got the assembly back into my chassis. After some jiggery pokery, I had problems with the 4 pin fan connector on the fan. The male pins were slightly out of line and so forcing the plugs together forced some of these pins back. So I had to play with the connector to get the pins back in line. Once done, putting the rest of the machine back together was a familiar process. So, the moment of truth, time to press the power button. Will it work? - drum roll - yes! All that was needed was a change in the bios to change the core clock to 166Mhz and I was good to go!Now for that fan - it sounded like my vacuum cleaner! Thankfully Thermaltake provide a fan speed adjustment knob - and now it's much quieter than the old fan. Despite that, the cpu temperature registors at 42 degrees idle - 8 degrees lower than my stock fan on the last machine. So, the acid test, was it worth it? Well fs2004 ran at 7fps with a modified afcad at EGLL beforehand, it now runs at 13fps - so it's an 80% improvement. Considering all other areas of fs2004 run much much smoother now, I consider the CPU upgrade to be well worth it. With the other upgrades I've made over the last few months, I think my machine is now just below the top end spec machines. I like it, my tinkering fingers are idle - for now :-)
