Overclocking My P4 2.8GHZ

Featured Replies

hey guys i have a Socket 478 motherboard and i have a P42.8GHZ i want to overclock it to 3.2ghz would it be possible with this fan .Coolermaster Aero 4 Lite (Socket 478) (HS-009-CM) it says it can go upto 3.2ghz and i quote "The Coolermaster Aero 4 Lite is capable of cooling upto 3.2GHz P4 processors" so would that meen i could get upto that without my pc crashing ? ive tried it on this fan it crashes when it reaches 3.0ghz i have it on 2.9Ghz atm and its running perfect but i would like 3.2ghz anyway hope you lot can help :-) thanks

There are many variables that can lead to a successful OR unsuccessful overclock....and the CPU is only one small part part of the equation.1: Your motherboard has to support it.2: Your RAM has to be able to support the increased FSB.3: You should be able to lock your AGP/PCI frequencies through the BIOS4: You have to control the Vcore voltages on the CPU5: Just because your Coolermaster says it can handle a 3.2 doesnt mean it can dissipate the heat of an overclocked processor to 3.2...maybe just a stock 3.2.Memory, Motherboard and CPU go hand in hand when overclocking. The more functions and options you have at your disposal, the better. Also the quality of your components (Especially Motherboard and Memory brands)play a critical role in pushing the envelope to new heights. What do you have of each?Mike P4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExWatercooled baby!!!Pics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002Areyounervousyet.jpg

sometimes bumping up the voltage a little adds stability. Only upgrade the fan if it's a heat issue. Otherwise you found your CPU's limit.

Sometimes what may seem like a CPU limit is actually a limit within the motherboard or aggressive memory timings....Hard thing to just isolate to one part. My 2.8 is overclocked to 3.06 and cannot go any higher because of my ram, and not the cpu itself.P4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExWatercooled baby!!!Pics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002Areyounervousyet.jpg

My 2.8 is rock solid at ~3.3 with no voltage bumps and the stock Intel fan/sink.Are you running a 2.8/533 or 2.8/800? My guess is that you're on a 533 machine if you're having troubles. Are you sure that it is the CPU causing the crash and not memory or other factors?
