November 29, 200322 yr what tricks can i use to push my 56k to the limit? i wont be getting broadband until early spring next year and i'm a heavy multiplayer gamer. i've done some stuff but it not as much as i would like.if u got any suggestions i like to hear em.
November 29, 200322 yr The speed of your 56K modem is directly linked to your telephone connection. If you have more than one phone line, you can try connecting it to the other line; you can try asking the phone company to check your line connection, but don't hold your breath that you'll get much cooperation. No one I know gets anywhere near the top 56K speed out of their modem. The only other thing I've heard about recently is the higher speed dialup offered by some ISPs. It works by compressing the webpages that you visit so they travel faster and then "unzips" them on your screen. It's really only good for faster web surfing; I have no idea if it would even affect multiplay but probably not.As far as I know, there is nothing you can do within the computer settings that will help. Sorry.-Lindy (also stuck with a 56K dialup):-wave
December 3, 200322 yr I looked at the proxyconn site and their info seems up and up. I plan to do more investigation but it seems clear their compression techniques are sound. I have a lot of security issues because of my job so I will have to get a better understanding of their security features but at first glance, they look good.Another thing to keep in mind about regular dial up service is that your modem uses drivers. (No s*&t wiseguy:-roll) Make sure you have the most current drivers. I use an external robotics 56k that I bought in 99. I downloaded new drivers this summer and went from about 39k on average to a solid 48k connect speed.
