December 20, 200322 yr Hey guys,I just upgraded my RAM with another 512Mb PC2100DDR. It seems to be working fine in the BIOS and in general Windows use. When I used FS for the first time this morning I was greeted with crashes to desktop and I couldn't load the simulation itself. Eventually it packed up completely and FS refused to run even to the opening screen. This was using the 40.72 drivers. I reinstalled my original drivers which came with the card to similar results. It would run in software but not in hardware graphics mode. I then got the latest 53.04 Detonators and installed them and it works, but with one major flaw. The blurries are everywhere in force. The CaptainSim 727, the apple of my eye, looks fine, but from the VC the view both inside and out is extremely blurred whereas it was fine before!Interestingly, FPS are about the same but judders are gone. When I press P everything becomes sharp and clear again, as soon as I resume the sim, it all re-blurs.What's the deal with this? Any ideas on how to fix this?Cheers,ToniPS: My spec...1.4GHz Athlon Thunderbird1024Mb PC2100 DDR RAM128Mb Graphics Aperture Size (Max 128Mb)Asus A7V266FSB Motherboard (VIA chipset)SoundBlaster128 SoundcardELSA Gladiac 721 GeForce3Ti200 64Mb DDRDetonator 53.04 DriversWin98SE
December 20, 200322 yr Oh nooo! I just heard word that Win98SE can't handle more than 512Mb of RAM! Is there a patch available? Or is it called XP?Cheers,
December 20, 200322 yr You can edit the registry, (search google), or do the smart choice, upgrade to Windows XP.
December 21, 200322 yr Hi,I'm not sure it can't run with more than 512 - just that it doesn't report it properly. I can't remember ever having problems with Win98 and the amount of RAM - alhough that was quite a while ago now.Whilst searching for the registry hack you might want to search for a memory testing proggie - can't off the top of my head remember the names of any but they certainly exist. You can test your RAM and make sure you haven't got a duff stick. You might also want to make sure you put the extra RAM into the slots recommended by your motherboard manufacturer - on some boards it can matter which slots you use - depending on all sorts of variables etc.Sorry I can't be of any more help!Rich.
December 21, 200322 yr No I tried to run 98 with more then 512 ram and it cannot work, windows 98 just simply doesnt have good memory management, you can edit 98 to use the extra RAM but still doesnt really run as good.
December 21, 200322 yr Yeah - in the days of Win98 they never thought people would want or would have 1GB of RAM. Like I said - it has been a few years now. I'm sure I got my machines running OK with it, but like you said, it is never gonna be 100%Rich.
December 23, 200322 yr Well...interesting findings. Made the leap to XP and fps are up about 10 all round, no jerks/stutters, and image sharpness is way up. The triple whammy of XP, more RAM, and formatting must have done something good to it...:)
December 23, 200322 yr Sorry to dive in here, but all this talk of 98 not supporting more than 512mb is BS.98 can address 2GB of process memory like most other MS operating systems (including Win2K and XP - with a few exceptions). The deficiencies of 98 and large amounts of RAM are well documented elsewhere, and have largely to do with the amount of cache that can be used sucessfully. If you edit the required settings for vcache, you can easily and sucessfully utilise 1GB of RAM._______RegardsChris Ehttp://www.circle-software.co.uk/php/html/images/logo.gifVisit http://www.circle-software.co.ukHome of X-Plane Photographic Scenery : England & Wales
December 23, 200322 yr Yeah..I don't think we were saying you couldn't just that it wasn't like XP etc.
December 27, 200322 yr Thanks for the advice & info lads. Grappling now with XP's shiny blue and green-ness...
